Original suspension Adjustment on C4 90??
Yesterday I went to the repair shop were I am fixing some oil leaks, I was talking to the mechanic and I told him that I might want to change the suspension the first thing to lower a bit the car and to get better handling (I donīt track the car).
To my surprise he told me that with the original suspension there was a possibility to lower it by 1 cm I thought this was not possible, does anyone know anything about it?

Hi,
It is possible to lower the original spring perches down to the bottom of their threads. Take a look at each of the shock assemblies and see if there is any thread left.
Ade.

Thanks Ade
have you done this in your car? What effect has it on the handling of the car? I suppose the "right" way as the mechanic said is to change the whole setup, but I would like to test this before. My car has right know 60.000Km and the suspension looks still in good condition.

Hi,
Yes I had this done when I bought the car at 32K miles. For me the max lowering of the front ended up still being too high and I have subsequently fitted coilovers to get down to RS height.
Lowering it on standard suspension certainly improves handling so it's worth a try. The car will need complete realignment after lowering as this effects all you suspension settings. Also don't assume that you can simply lower the car down to the bottom thread point, as the car needs to be corner weighed, so a bit of thread may be needed to get this right.

Thanks for the input Ade, Iīll get this done as well as the realigment, Iīm trying to find a good compromise between the "looks" (the car has 17" cup II wheels, handling (mountain roads, not track)and driving comfort (highway trips)if possible at a good cost.

Dear Alex,
You can lower by 10 mm. There is 15 mm of adjustment but you need 5 mm for corner balancing. Lower the front only by 10 mm and leave the rear at standard and correct ride height. In addition for the C4, take off the 18 mm rear sway bar and replace it with a 21 or 22 mm C2 rear sway bar. For C2 owners (not you Alex) take off the 21 mm (1990 only) or 22 mm rear sway bar and replace with a C4 18 mm or Tiptronic 19 mm version. Always replace the rubber bushes. I think you will be happy with these simple changes.
Ciao,
Adrian

Don't you have to perform an alignment or corner balance after lowering the car by adjusting the spring perches?
Also, why do you recommend C2 owners put on the 18mm?

Iīll try that before making any further changes in the suspension.
Thanks

Rear sway bar is about Ģ80 plus bushes here in the UK - probably at least half that price anywhere else.
You do have to re-align the suspension after lowering the spring perches, but don't have to when you replace the anti-roll bar.
Alex - although you can replace the anti-rollbar yourself (if you can get the bolt off that is), I wouldn't be tempted to do the spring lowering yourself.
Have fun : )

For the sway bar are there any differences from year to year? my car is a C4 1990 does it matter to get one from a C2 92, 93...?
Which would be the best option, Adrian mentioned 21mm and 22mm.
Thanks

You want the C2 21mm bar.
Part Number
964.333.701.07 - 21mm Carrera 2
The bolt holding the end of the bar on is a real bugger to remove if its been on there since new. I suspect you may want to get your mechanic to do that as its easier when its up in the air.
