Talking Handbrake shoes disintegrated - DIY addict

Hi Guys,

Just some info for the list on recent events with my 91 C2. I posted a question asking about reasons why the hand brake lever was engaging on 10 clicks rather than the usual 4-5 and was told to have a look around the rear disk area and the adjustment points at the lever and in the mechanism at the rear.

The park brake on the 964 is completely independant of the rear caliper, and is operated by two brake shoes that press against the inside of the rear brake disk. Seeing as I was going to change the rear disks and pads anyway, I figured the handbrake could be looked at at the same time.

On removing the calipers......a real pain in the *** as the lower bolt is accessed through a hole in the hub carrier and the is NO space around it!! and the disk, what I found was that the brake lining had completely disintegrated to powder. I was suprised at this and can only think that on the last service, they adjusted them too close to the disk and they have now worn away.

Any one else come across this? Suffice to say, I got new brake shoes and now its as good as it ever was.

On the maintance front, i've had the car 10 months and in that time have had to do the following as DIY stuff......

New pads and discs(rotors) all round including park brake shoes.
Repaired 2 HVAC servos.
Re soldered HVAC control unit.
Spoiler curtain repair.
Fixed smile.
New stereo and speakers.
Repaired wiper stalk.
Fixed non flashing lock push.
Replaced bulbs in centre console.
Replaced steering rack boots.
New Headlight bulbs.

God knows what I would have paid in labour, but I never thought 964 ownership was going to be such a hands on experience, but its been great fun, and i've learned loads. Still not confident enough to attempt a 24k service though, but at this rate its only gonna be a matter of time ;-)

Anyone else been as active on the DIY front?

Cheers,

Taj.

Great to hear that you are also a keen hands on type Porsche owner, I too have learned loads and done a good few repairs to my car, a huge saving on labour costs.

New Pads (twice in one year) and Rotors
Replaced bulbs in the centre consol
New Curtain
New Wiper Arms and Blades
New Headlight Bulbs
New Stereo - Minidisk Headunit (Speakers were fine)
New Alloys (Boxter 17")
New Interioir Carpets

Porsche, Not just a car but a way of life!!

Just curious,

Bill,

Most definately not.........I have never had a japanese car, and at the current time have no plans to. I tend to stick to German or Swedish brands (VW, SAAB, Porsche).

Why do you ask?

Taj.
