New owner 90' C2 coupe 5 speed. I have major probems.
Hi guy's, outstanding forum, I'm so glad this comes with the car I have owned the car for four days now and here is my list of problems In order of importance.
updated fix:
1. Hesitation on initial application of throttle after a deceleration , MAF ?(fixed, 02 sensor, fuel filter.)
2. Left side defrost does not heat.(fixed, servo internal contacts cleaned.)
3. Bright lights no work.
4. Speedometer does not work on start-up most of the time.
5. Idle seeking.(much better after fix#1)
6. Cannot turn the blower motor completely off on my hvac system.(normal)
7. Starter is clicking out before engine actually starts.(rare occassion)
8. sunroof liner sagging(fixed, removal of panel and applying new adhesive.)
9. water in front floor board, leaking windshield seal?
10. uh oh, sometimes my clutch slips when I romp on it.
11. window switches stick in "on" position if i'm not careful.
12. fuel smell in cab on occasion.
13. a/c seems inadiquate ?
note: the word "major" is in no way implying that all of these problems are severe or debilitating. It is however used as a tracking beakon for 964 guru's that are looking for a challenge.

Hi,
1) MAF is what 993s have (and can be fitted to 964s) but you probably don't have one. You do have an air flow sensor - which might cause hesitation if it has a problem - but it could be related to 5).
2) The motor servos stick. They are under the cover at the back of the luggage compartment. Search the archives for more details - but basically you will need a new motor.
3) Not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean headlights?
4) Mine does the same occasionally when it's cold and a few people have reported the same. If you tap the speedo does it start working? If so - probably just needs dismantling and servicing but given the cost I just tap mine occasionally.
5) I guess you mean hunting. How much? Search the archives - loads of causes. Mine was worn distributor caps / rotor arms but there are lots of other possibilities.
6) I think there is always some air being blown even when my fan switch is on 0.
7 (first one) Sounds like starter motor is on the way out.

Thanks Dave, I will go ahead and attack one of these. I know I have 2 blower motors up front. I'm assuming there are 2 servo motors controlling separate blend doors. So if I'm not getting heat to the left side it probably has nothing to do with motors ect. at the engine compartment ?
Also
Do you know if the AFS is a heated wire style like a lot of U.S. manufactured cars? If so , from previous experience that could be a major culprit.
I did a search on this and people gave all kinds of suggestions,I was just thinking with such an accurate description of the problem it would narrow it down to maybe a couple of items to check.
I'll keep posting what I have fixed and how. Fun car all the less.

Hi,
Sorry - when I used the term motor it was obviously confusing. I meant the things you are calling "servo motors controlling separate blend doors". These servos are the things under the cover in the luggage area and it is a very common problem - I had to have one of mine replaced because my left side was always cold. I'd say it's 90% likely that's your problem (if it isn't I have no idea what the other 10% of things are).
Not sure what AFS is. Are we still talking about the same thing?

Hi. Re; Problem 2, (I have it too) Roly Baldwin has just provided a DIY with pictures on how to remove and revamp your heater motors - it seems they can often be dismantled and brought back to life. He also shows you which motor does what.
Its in the tech section of John Miles' baby, www.porsche.964.co.uk.
Its on my to do list..but Roly, you never mentioned the posibility of needing to wrestle AC pipes out the way first!! AC is such a PITA

Hi Dave my car went from bad to worse. now priority #1 is the seeking idle has now turned into very rough idle and about 4 try's to start the car cold, I have to press the accelerator while starting and it wants to die. After I get it running it feels like no power at all below 2000 rpm then clears up. I took it for a 15 minute drive to work this morning when I got there it was still idling real rough. I have a feeling it is going to give me trouble when I go to start it again .
I'm going to check a few things today
get a fuel filter.
get a DME relay.
timing light on second dist.
and I'll try unplugging the 02. (but I dont think that relates to cold start )
anthing else ??: (
wish I could change this guys ebay rating to ****.
I've only had the car a week!
Any one elses expertize would be nice, thanks.

I was plauged with a broken distributor belt, failed DME relay, and the airbag/seatbelt lamp gremlin. I still have an oil weep and jammed sunroof too. However, once you do work out all the bugs and problems, you'll really enjoy the car. Stick with it; the payoff is worth the effort. Despite the above-average service issues associated with these cars, they are still incredible to drive and enjoy. It's easy to get discouraged, but hang in there; I'm confident you'll be thrilled with the results.

Hi Johnny,
Sorry about leaving out the bit about aircon - my car's not got it fitted.
Send me a picture and I'll update the article, though.
Cheers,
Roly
P.S. Anyone interested in knowing how to renovate their Targa panel?

Hi,
Unplugging the O2 is probably not the best idea since the DME thinks it's still there. If you do just disconnect it I think the car enters "limp home" mode. Your best bet maybe to get a hammer on it - whatever the problem is may have logged a fault code.
I'll second what Robert said as well. When I got my car there were a million and one problems with it - some small and some (unfortunately) not so small. I began to despair of it - and I remember starting a thread (on smartgroups I think, not here) saying it was driving me nuts and I was beginning to forget what the plus points of having the car were. At that time, it was only because my indicator switch was intermittent - a stupid little thing but it seemed like the last straw on top of all the other problems I'd had.
I got some good replies telling me not to despair and I stuck with it, and I'm now very happy with my car. So much so that I thought about upgrading to a 993 a few weeks ago, stuck an ad in the paper and as soon as I'd done that I thought "I don't want to sell this car" and cancelled the ad. You're bound to find other things that you need to sort - but it's well worth it once it's been done.

hehe..hahaha....MuaHAHAHAHA! Holy sh#t. It never ran like that on the test drive))))
This thing can't be 250 hp!
Anyways, as you can tell I got it fixed. The problem is I don't know if it was the fuel filter or the 02 sensor that fixed it since I popped them both on at the same time, I'm leaning toward measly fuel filter. Oh! this thing is bad !!! *** Dyno tells me at least 15% increase(it was struggling)!
Sorry for freaking out guys : P

Hey Urban I am down south of you I have ppl up in Dallas next time up I will bring my P car and tear up some roads. Glad you have the problems taken care of. My car still has a bit of rough idle and hunts just a bit turns out to be the bottom set of plugs. Oil soaked wires I think. The 964s are one of the best P cars made my two cents. I am looking for a diff car but not going to get rid of my 964. Looking for cat pri and sec bypass just to make some noise.
