Just to close this off: belts changed on sat, run out and then re-checked. No more squealing or smell of rubber. Bearings all seem ok on alternator, not noise at all under load. Thanks guys.
Dave - it was depressing that AS's book didnt cover the correct way to fix the reflectors!
When i put the orange ones back on it turned out that the spire clips that the screws go through were corroded, and it was one of these breaking that allowed the reflector to fall out.
