Post 1992 C2 advice

Ready to buy a 92' C2 w/29,000 miles for $27,800. Full service and it was a two owner car.

Car looks great and runs great...hmmm what should I look out for?

What's your take?

Stan:

The '92's were getting to be pretty good 911's. Porsche addressed the cylinder to head leak by then. I'd still have that checked for just to be safe.

The more reliable LUK flywheel was introduced late in the '92 model year to replace the less robust Freudenberg flywheel that is/was prone to failure. Bruce Anderson writes that Porsche changed to the LUK around May 13, 1992.

The car will need a dual distributor vent kit. $13 part and 1/2 of labor to do this update. Simple and cheap, but necessary. The dual distributor belt should be replaced every 50,000 miles or 5 years on average.

Check to insure all accessories work and all warning lights are working and operating correctly. Inoperable accessories can be expensive to fix and warning lights that are disabled may be covering up unseen problems.

A/C condition is always a must to check since these systems can be expensive to fix.

All the other used car items (tires, brakes, bodywork, etc) are always good to check.

That car has low miles and a decent price. If all checks out and you like it, I'd snap it up.

Good Luck!
Jay

Thanks for the reply. I also have been a Porsche owner for a long time and just recently had enough money to get a C2. I have looked the car over and I've spoken to the P-tech who worked on the C2 and all seems ok.
I have to decide between the C2 and the new 350Z.
Should I go for the C2 or a new 350Z?

blu 951 you sound just like me I'm going between s2000 and a beautiful 91 964 I found. New versus used is not an easy choice is it!

I would wait at least a year to get the Z. It is generally not a good idea to get a first year model.

Yup I've heard plenty at my350z.com about interior rattles, tire feathering, grease on the windows, trans issues etc...
New or used is the issue but bottom line I think the C2 would be better buy.

blu and Rob, If you are really serious about getting a Honda or a Nissan instead of a 964, consider my impression. I recently purchased a 1993 RSA with 21k miles and have a 2002 M3 I use for a daily driver. HANDS DOWN the 964 is a better, more direct pure driving experience. Unmistakeable look and, oh the sound of that air-cooled engine. My advice is to get a well maintained and documented low mi. version, even if it costs a few more bucks.

Just the fact that you're considering a 10+ year old Porsche against a new jap thingy shows to me what the stakes are. Clearly the 911 is the best!!

Blu, My neighbor just got a 350Z, I saw it parked out in the drive. The first thing that struck me was how much it was shaped like a 911. A little late to the party those boys at Nissan are, don't ya'think? When a 350Z takes the checkered flag at the Rolex, I'll first in line to get one. Until then it just me and my 964.

Oh they're not late to the game, Nissan has always had Porsche people design their cars for them :-) Although it was Datsun in those days, I believe the original z-car proto's were designed by the famed Porsche 911 designer named Albrecht Goertz. I believe he also did work for BMW.

Regarding the debate over whether to buy a C2 over a 350Z, however, I guess it really depends on what you want the car for. For me, I always loved the shape and the sound of the 911, and the new stuff seems so derivitive visually, so I'm not interested this point. But aside from that, its hard to argue for a 13 year old car that is fairly low-tech and low on power compared to what you can get today - those WRX's for example (227HP for $25K), WRX STi (300HP & 300ft-lbs!!!), the Mustang Mach 1's (302HP for $29K) SVT Cobra (390HP for $38K) and the when the bugs get ironed out, the full-go 350Z's seem pretty sweet.

Jon-
I know what you mean. One of my friends has the 02'WRX and my bro wants the new WRX STI. I know there is no other sound like the air cooled six and the way it drives but there are other flavors of ice cream.
