Post Replace or? Faded rear light panels

My '91 C2 rear light panels are faded.. it doesn't do the car justice but, i'm just starting to set it up for DE's & some Auto-x w/ C4 rear brakes, pads, new flywheel(Clutch/plate throw-out etc since they were in there), roll bar (safety/+ vidieo/fire ex mount)Should I just leave it alone & save the $ for tires/suspension??
BTW.. any suggestions on how to get an e-pic of my cars to come up w/ my posts??

If you change the light units, you'll probably have to settle for the later type with the vent holes across the top and no seal at the bottom. I don't like these so much, but there you go.

To include a pic, upload it (here or anywhere on the net) and copy its URL.

Then, when typing your message, click on the 'image' button below the text field, next to the graemlins.

...or maybe you mean the little 'avatars' by each person's handle.

You can pick one from the avatars list in your 'profile', or have a personal one if you pay for Rennlist membership.

Hello All,

I would be interested in this as well. My 93 also has faded rear lights. Are the new ones a big improvement or are they all "pink" in color? Any cheaper sources?

Thanks!

The cheapest source I'm aware of here in the US is Sunset Porsche = dealer cost + 15%. As I recall, dealer cost for a rear taillight is close to $130. Sunset advertises in Excellence, and make sure you ask for the Excellence magazine discount if you call.

I've just replaced my rearlights (both sides and the middle) (courtesy of the now-BMW driver Pono - I have no shame ).

I can thoroughly recommend this - it makes a huge difference - if you want a before and after have a look at the piccky of my cab on John Miles site in the wallpaper section for the before and the pictures I posted here a couple of weeks ago for the new - e.g. the bigger one of my avatar.

Pono originally bought them from Vertex who I think are cheaper than others for these parts

I was VERY lucky in that one day I was hanging around the local P-Car shop when a "picky" customer was having his current lenses/center reflector changed out with brand new ones...$100 and I walked away with his PERFECT set of used tailight assemblies and center reflector.

One more day and I would've started ordering new tailights then a center reflector once I recovered from the expense!!

I would say it makes a BIG difference in the looks, mine were terribly faded and cracked...the tailight bulbs went out often as water got in the lenses from washing the car, etc.

It was driving me nuts! Eventually the left tailight's sockets for the bulbs rusted out and the contacts fell out onto the ground when changing a bulb...so that was it.

I've seen paint products designed to recolour faded or colour clear lenses. Don't know what the results are like but it's got to be worth a try before spending 100s on replacing the originals.

Hi Riccardo,

It's +15%. Sunset sells parts at their cost (what they pay Porsche) plus what they call a handling fee = 15%. I see it not as a handling fee, but as a small profit. There's also (of course) a charge for shipping.

I bought a new right-rear taillight (mine was cracked, not really faded) from Vertex in August of last year. I thought they had the best price. Shortly thereafter, I discovered Sunset's add in Excellence. Turns out, I could have saved close to $50 if I had bought the taillight from Sunset.

FWIW, you can click on "VRAM" below to see a picture of the rear of my car. The left-rear taillight has never been replaced. When you look at the taillights in person--and if you stare long enough--you can see that the right-rear is redder. I have, however, seen 964s with severely faded rear taillights. I'm guessing the amount the taillights fade is determined by how much time the car spends outdoors and in strong sunshine. My car is usually garaged, and we typically don't see the sun till around noon here on the coast, so I guess that's why my taillights have faired relatively well.

Looks like I need to add Sunset to my list of "places to price check" for parts. Now if I can just work out what the Part Numbers for aero mirrors are.....

Thanks Randall

Regarding Sunset... are there any other cost-plus parts places for those of us who live in Washington/Oregon (Sunset won't give us the good deal in our states)???

Hendrick Porsche (N.C.) does very well. They also advertise in Excellence, and you (again) need to ask for the Excellence magazine special. Instead of cost (+), they advertise 20-25% off. They sold me a climate control unit for dealer cost last December = $760, list ~ $1150. Even Sunset was $760 + 15%.

Kenn Young--I'm pretty sure this is the same great Kenn that used to work at Hendrick--has moved to Reeves Porsche. So, I suspect they'll be offering some pretty good deals. They advertise, "Please call for our special mail order pricing." Again, Excellence magazine.

All this said, Sunset is the only P-car dealer that I'm aware of that states explicitly cost + 15% on everything.

Well then I have a solution for all of you!! I bought this stuff at Home Depot, its called 'Stained Glass Window Tint' or something similar. Its deep red in color, and is transparent. I put 1 light coat on my taillights and voila! Looks amazing! I highly recommend this. I've done this to my girlfriends BMW and her fathers as well, covering up the amber section. Its very durable too, doesn't come off in heat, or rain, or washing the car. And if you ever decide you want to re-do it, just take some oven cleaner and wipe it off. Give it a try, can't hurt! Only $5..
