Question Production #s for 1989 C4???

I'm trying to figure out how many cars there are like mine out there. According to my unconfirmed info, there were 1117 c4s imported to the US in 1989 and the first 750(?) were guards with black int. If this is true, then that would mean that there were 367 of all other color combos combined. (I don't remember where I got those numbers, so they could be wrong) Mine is Black/black. Does anyone know how many of these were imported to the US?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul:

Two sources I have state that 1117 C4's were 1989 US specification 964 C4 models. (As we all know the C2 wasn't available until January of 1990).

I have also heard that a specific number of 1989 C4's were made in Guards Red over black. My mechanic told me the number was 600 units, but that is nothing official. Maybe Adrian can shed some light on this...

Hope this helps,
Jay

Dear Jay,
I have the same production numbers. These are straight from the Porsche archives and published in a number of books. Of the 1117 nobody really knows if this was the number produced or planned. Just over 2000 ROWs were also made.
As for the colours. You know the old Myths and Legends. Firstly Porsche cannot tell you how many were painted in any colour. They still cannot.
I agree that many were guards red but I have a huge cross section of photos of US based C4s and I can say from the hundreds that I have, that 50% are not Guards red. Now if we are talking the UK, then that is different.
There is no further light to shed because nobody really knows.
Porsche started deliveries of C4s Feb/March 1989.
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: Just another piece of useless info. It took 80 man hours to assemble a C4 in 1989. Do you know how long it takes in 2002 to assemble a 996 C4? 5 man hours. Tell you something.

Adrian,
Isn't it amazing how much harder people work these days? (just kidding!!!) I've had 2 Boxsters and a bunch of 911s (1980-1992) and the difference in build quality is HUGE! I like the Boxster and the 996 just fine, but they really don't stir anything up inside you, do they? I have a good friend who owned the local Porsche dealership from 1985-1992 and he told me (based on his ever-failing memory) about the 750 Guards red C4s in '89. He said a several US dealers were allotted 1 of these early cars and the one he got was sold within a few hours of arriving. Then 6 hours after that, they had to take a tow truck to a sand bar near the river to get the guy out. I guess he figured 4-wheel drive... That same car was my very first 911, I bought it used in 1996. I've been hooked ever since! Thanks for the info!

Dear Paul,
That may have been 750 for the entire production run but I really do not think this figure is accurate. It is far too high. There is no question that Indian/Guards red is popular but they must be almost all gone based on the photo records I have. As for Boxsters and the 996. The only new models which stir anything inside me are the 996TT, GT-3 and GT-2. None of which I will ever be able to afford unless I get real lucky,
Ciao,

PS: It is nice to have a C4 with some history as well. One of the people who kindly contributed to my book owns David Coulthards old 964 C4. Polar silver before you ask.
