Hood Badge Recall on all 996's???
Just back from a visit to the 996 Turbo forum. It seems they've got a problem with their hood/bonnet badges flying off!
That'll teach 'em to buy a mass produced vehicle!
I'll stick with my 'last of the handbuilt' Porsche and worry about the clutch, flywheel, oil leaks................

Piers... you think the badge is bad, you should have an '00 model 911 that is worth half what you paid 24 months after purchase. If I ever sale this thing, I will be in a '93 RSA!!!

It was fine this weekend so fingers crossed it was a one-off 'odd moment'!?
12K service is due soon so I'll get clutch and the James Bond style 'pall of smoke at traffic lights' checked then.

Christer,
There are also the 6k services (just an oil change) and the 24k services (valve adjustments), although not in official Porsche land, its more of an independents' thing.

I took JZM's 24k service to be something that I need to do every year.
Is the 12k or 6k service for people that do only very limited mileage then and can afford to skimp on maintenance?

Hi
I spoke recently to a guy who owns a Porsche workshop here in Melbourne. He also does some of the work for the race teams here in Australia...
Anyway - he swears that the build quality of the 996's were seriously comprimised for profit. He showed me around his workshop at some of the work that he was doing. The 964s and 993s were just so much better in build quality. I looked at a few 996s with the dash out, and it is all plastic, and looks pretty ordinary, whereas the 964s and 993s still had metal parts, and looked solid.
Well.... let's just say I might keep my 964 Turbo, and go after a Dino next...

High,
I own a 1991 C2 cab and I do some auto detailing on the side(Porsches only) for my mechanic, he sent me a 996 C4 w/ a aerokit and sport exhaust..
It was very clear to me the quality in these newer cars is seriously comprimized, the carpets are thin, so is the leather, ALOT of plastic, small gauges(i'm not even sure they are VDO, cause it doesnt say it on the gauge),cupholders???
they definatly do not have the 'handbuilt' feel to them, and the car cost 95K!, but I must say the thing was 'Fast', but you can get used to that quick.

I agree something has changed.
I test drove a 996 when I was buying my 964. The lease rate was very appealing. Nice Car too. But somewhere along the line (and Porsche is not alone here - the new S class Merc is the same) the new 911 and new S class no longer look or feel (or smell) the same as their ancestors from the 70's, 80's or early-mid 90's. What I came to believe was the feel of Teutonic "carved from stone" quality has changed.
Not to say everyone is going to agree which is better but I know which I prefer <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
