What's the REAL reason you bought your 964?
**Just a little fun **
In my previous spoiler thread, Jon asked about me being in a band and I replied that "I bought the 964 because it has a nifty drumstick holder in the front bonnet"... As you can see below. So, what's the "real" reason all of you rennlister's bought your 964?

I really gave a lot of thought to my purchase. When I started considering a Porsche, I owned a Dodge Stealth RT/TT. The car was a money pit and it depreciated rapidly, and I wanted a replacement for it.
When I considered cars initially I didn't even think about a 911 because, like so many others, I simply thought they were out of my price league. A little research proved otherwise, and suddenly it was tossed in the mix. My "mix" for replacements consisted of the following:
- Corvettes, both the C4 and the C5
- BMWs, M series and Z series
- Mazda RX-7 TT
- Toyota Supra TT
- Nissan 300ZX TT
- Boxters
- 944
- Eventually the 3.2 Carrera and the 964
I based my decision on performance, depreciation, looks, quality, and how hard it would be to get parts for the car. Performance knocked out the Boxter, the 944, and most of the BMWs (except the M3), and really even the 3.2 Carrera pretty quickly (but I still considered it a candidate...it was on the threshold performance wise). The M3 and the 300ZX TT were eliminated really because I don't like their looks that much (I don't DISLIKE their looks, I just don't love the way they look...I own a 300ZX NA as a commuter car). The Toyota Supra TT was eliminated because I felt parts might be difficult to come by and costly...only a few thousand of them were imported. The Vettes and the RX-7 didn't seem to hold their values as well as the 911s did, but the Vettes will still hold their value better than other cars, but not as well as 911s do. The Rx-7 seems somewhat questionable since a lot of Japanese "super cars" seem to be worth no more than they're worth in parts after their over 10 years old. I also felt that quality might be an issue with both of these cars...I've been in C4 'Vettes that had the fiberglass panels rattling like they were ready to fall off (whether this is a C5 issue is unknown to me, but I wasn't certain I wanted to take the risk), and Mazda (at the time) was having a lot of financial problems and it seemed to show in their cars...particularly the paint.
After my analysis, it really boiled down to the C5 Vette vs. the 964. The 964 won...what can I say. I'm happy.

I bought my Porsche based on a life-long desire to have one. I was about 15 or 16 years old and I had two close friends- one who parents owned a metallic tan-looking 930 turbo, which was definetely cool but we never got close to it...ever. And another friend whose dad brought home a brand new silver SC in 1979 or so, followed some time later by a used white 911S for his wife.... I got a couple rides in the SC and eventually got to drive the 911S a few times. I was hooked- the look, sound and smell. Everybody else was into muscle cars at that time and I didn't really care about that.
It took to my mid-thirties to be able to afford a good one, and my plan was to buy the newest model which looked like those cars from my teenage years- which of course turned out to be the 964.
Yes there are faster cars around, perhaps more dependable, more economical, more sensible, etc. But none of that figured in. Pure emotional decision.

I bought my first 911 ('86 3.2) in late 1996 after wanting one since I was 12. (I remember, in 1986, buying a Subaru from a guy who owned a mid '70's 911. I asked him more questions about the 911 than I did about the car I was buying from him...).
After 4 years of 911 ownership, I noticed that 964 prices were really falling. When looking for my first 911 (fall of 1996), the few 964's that I looked at were priced in the upper $30k to over $40k range. Way out of my range.
On a whim, I test drove an abused '91 C2 Tiptronic two summers ago with 71,000 miles on the clock "just to see what it was like". It definitely had some problems. The speedo didn't work, it wouldn't rev much past 4000 before shifting, it had enough warning lights staying lit to light up a small town and my S-10 Chevy felt like it had more power. (They were asking $29,900.) Even still, I was hooked. I sold my '86 and bought a 964 after two months of intense searching.

I wanted a fun car, but needed something with a back seat for the kids.
Actually, I have been riding motorcycles for fun for a long time, but found the weather and child-transportation issues were keeping me off the bike more than on, so I started shopping for a performance car with back seat. At first, I wanted a six-series BMW coupe:
Nearly bought one in Texas (bad PPI). Then, I realized a Porsche was within striking distance of my loan officer. After shopping (mostly on-line) for a few months, I found my '91 C4 in Ohio with 47k miles.

Robert, Looks like your son really knows how to enjoy the 911 experience himself. You've got him on regular smokes, right? Lights and menthols have no place in a Porsche!
I just completed my first year of Porsche ownership and it's been everything I hoped for and then some. After spending years blasting around in company cars and nifty SUVs, I finally decided it was time to be less practical and give myself a reward.
Life's too short and you certainly can't take it with you.

Amem!
When I got my car a year ago, I got a lot of comments from co-workers about "How can I afford such a car?" My response is, "By the time I sock away enough to afford it, I'll be too old and feeble to enjoy it." Don't get me wrong, I want to be able to pass on some things to my five kids, but that's no reason to deny myself a real pleasure like Porsche ownership. You only get one ride on the merry-go-round of life. Hang on and enjoy it!

The real Reason Bob???
The color !
I mean after shopping for lots of months and looking at many of the car others mentioned, I had once again (this is my 2nd 911) decided it had to be a Porsche 911. I really liked a '87 Metallic Red Coupe, but wanted the 964 for the modern features, ABS, Air Bags (both to save my butt just in case I over do it) and many other features that for about $5000 more made it a Value decission.
I went back to Exotic Motorwerks again and there was this Amethyst Metallic Cab with only 36,000 miles (and My name on it). The rest was up to the bank and I drove it home!

Three Wheelin'
Age 11 my Dad took me to the London Motorshow. To get literature from Porsche stand I filled in questionnaire. 2 Weeks later local OPC sent a 911 round to my house for test drive. Hilarity all round when my mother explained I was an 11 year old school boy!
Aged 15 hitchiking was picked up by blue 911..was totally thrilled and blown away by noise speed etc etc (my dad drove Peugeot 504 Estate!)
I promised myself one day I'd have one - dream realised 11 months and 10K miles ago!

WHY?
Because I am a total petrol head and I have always wanted a Porsche 911. The 964 because it looks like a proper 911 but has modern oily bits. The 993 IMHO looks too fat and has lost the charm of the original lines. The 996 well... it is just too far removed from a real 911, it looks like a well worn bar of soap and has water pumping around the engine for Christ's sake!

When I was young I didn't like the styling of the 911. Growing older (and wiser) the 911 grew to me, to the extend that I wanted one. The 964 is the last 911 with the 'real' 911 look, with proper headlights. So it had to be the 964 (It's a daily driver for me, so ABS and airbags are a plus for me). Since I live in The Netherlands where it rains a lot, and since the Nordschleife is in a part of Germany where it usually rains, I chose the Carrera 4. No regrets.
One day I have to have the 993 TT. I won't sell my 964 though... So I'll need a big garage in the future

High,
I gotta admit, I didn't really like the looks of the 911 either when I was young(pre-teen), but then again I had no taste either. Driving on the road some 12-13 yrs ago while working, I saw a 964 they were brand new at the time, looked at my bud who was driving and said " I gotta get me one of THOSE", it was beautiful. My business was kicking ***, and my accountant told me I needed some more expenses, thats all I needed to here, everyone thought I was crazy or kidding, I was 26 yrs old at the time, and had gotten married 2 months earlier, it was the first fight of my marriage, "I'm getting it with you or without you" I told her(man was I a rookie). I still have both my 964 and my wife, Plus 3 kids, minus the business. Life is WAY to short once you have kids.

Ever since me and my high school buddies sat around drinking and smoking and dreaming of owning that gun-metal Porsche, I wanted one.
Finally at age 38, had my second kid and within 30 days realized that if I didn't do something for me now, it was all over. Sort of a preemptive midlife crisis abatement policy.

A piece of automotive art, an object of beauty.
The last in the line of the true 911 shape.
And after admiring it you get in and drive it, that's the REAL reason.
