So that's what's causing the noise!
Had a knocking noise coming from the area around the distributor......
To cut a long story short, my engine is now in a million bits and I am the proud owner of a knackered con rod and big end bearing and I'm hoping that the marks on the crank journal are not too bad to regrind. Anyone know a good contact, preferably in the UK for a single conrod? The thoughts of the total bill are making me queasy..... Ah well, if you can't take a joke then you shouldn't have bought a Porsche! Doing my best to keep smiling. Andy :crying: |
Hmmmm....This happend to me a few weeks ago as well, I just put my head down on the steering wheel and cried...
|
9m should have the odd one knocking about . ( excuse the pun)

What happened? This looks like a lubrication failure. Since only one bearing is affected, do you possibly have a blocked oil passage to that bearing? Did a hard particle break off and find its way to the bearing? I would open the oil pump and look at the internals to see if it possibly passed a broken piece, and is damaged. How was the oil pressure? How many miles on the engine?
Please figure out what caused this. I am operating on the assumption that the 964 engine is practically bullet-proof. This type of failure is scary. |
110K miles, good oil pressure right up until it went bang.
The oil pump will also be replaced as loads of bits of bearing went through it! The rest of the motor is spotless inside. As they say, $h*t happens...... |
This is exactly what happened to my motor...excellent oil pressure and everything. Actually, there where absolutely no issues until *rattle, rattle* BANG! I had just rolled 117K miles
|
Oh man, this is *just* what my Porsche paranoia needs! I'm at 200,000 km and counting...engine never touched. I take heart from the white C4 with 264k miles thread, but I guess we don't know what's been done to it.
I hope if it happens to me, I'll be as philosophical about it. I condole you. |
Really...Halloween is a month away. For the love of all things sacred, please put away the horror stories! :banghead:
You are scarring the hell out of me, and I only have 62K miles! BGL |
Andy, try Neil Bainbridge 01296 658422. He'll most likely be able to assist.

Well you know how they say " Cheer up mate, things could be worse......."
They're right and they are. Had a call yesterday, the crank had been taken in for checking prior to machining and it's cracked on both sides of the scored journal which may account for the big end going bang. Have stapled both sides of my face to keep a smile there.......anyone want to give me a new engine? Hey ho........ |
Folks these engines do need top end overhauls to prevent this kind of damage. The rod bolts can't handle a mis-shift.. The rod bolts will stretch and cause the bearing to egg shape, the sides of the bearings will get pinched and it's down hill from there. I'd open up the top end and replace the rod bolts along with a valve job. The bottom end should go past 150K..
