Question What is this stuff called?

Hi all,

Today started of pretty decent, weather wise, and then turned bad fast. Before I could get the top back up we had a torrential down poor. So if I only had a heated and some jets I could turn the footwells into hot tubs. Any way got the water sucked out and have the carpet mats drying. Underneath the carpet mats is this material that looks like rubber and has felt matting attached to the back side. It has started to fall apart. What is this stuff called and where can I get replacements? If this is a dealer thing to order does anyone know a part number. You help is appreciated.

Pretty sure that's soundproofing/deadening material. Anybody know for sure?

Photolaz,

you can order the sound absorber from any Porsche dealer - part numbers obviously depend on whether vehicle is LHD or RHD and on model year - up to -91 and from 92 onwards.

Best regards

I stripped mine out (so far just the rear) and replaced it with car audio insulation material which was less absorbent. It's a pain cutting it to fit but is much cheaper. The ideal material would be bouncy (for comfort) but have zero absorbency!

Happy to try and oblige I'm pretty sure I recall Adrian mentioning previously that he replaced some of his insulation with thin polystyrene for zero water absorbency. I ran my car for a few weeks with no material in the back and it's amazing how much noise is actually filtered!

Ok Guys,

Did some searching and here's what I found for part numbers. I understand these are not an arm and a leg as are other parts for our cars. I'll be calling the local dealer on Tues to get prices and possibly order some.

Hope this helps.

964.556.217.00 Left Front
964.556.218.00 Right Front (up to 1991)
964.556.218.02 Right Front (1992 and up)
964.556.215.00 Left Rear
964.556.216.00 Right Rear
964.556.239.00 Behind Seat/Shelf Mat (up to 1990)
964.556.239.01 Behind Seat/Upper Shelf Mat (1991 and up)
964.556.239.02 Behind Seat/Upper Shelf Mat, RS America

If you buy these (or any other original Porsche) parts mail-order from an out-of-state dealer you will save around 50%. Avoid your local dealers parts counter unless they offer to price match; it almost makes owning a Porsche affordable.

I just removed the old rubber part that was falling away from the expanded foam and replced it with 3mm rubber sheet. I left all the foam in place, cut the 3mm rubber sheet to size (a pain in the butt) and then just stuck it all down with a general adhesive. It worked great and cost about 10 bucks total. Be sure to stick all the carpet back in place when you are done or it looks tacky.
