New to the 964 forum and have a quick ?
Hello!!
i've been lurking around this forum about 2 months now and it's been very informative and educational to say the least. i was a regular on the 951 boards for a while until that dreaded day i had to let her go to a new home...but after almost 2 years of searching and waiting, i've finally been able to bring home my first 964
i purchased her from a fellow Rennlist member and i couldn't be happier...here's a pic:
i used to drive a '73 911t back in the mid-80's (which i am currently having restored) before my 951...but man alive!! the 964 is a completely different animal...it's unbelievable
anyway, i just wanted to introduce myself and ask my first of many questions...
my car is in need of a valve adjustment and as much as i would like to learn more about my car and attempt the service myself, i simply do not have the time to do so. my local wrench quoted me $830 for the adjustment and to change the oil. i searched the boards and it seems like this is a little on the high side. am i right?
can anyone in the VA/MD/DC region recommend a reputable "local" shop for this service?
thanks in advance everyone
Dan

Intersport in Tysons; a couple of blocks from HBL. They quoted me a WHOLE LOT more than $800+, but their quote was for a full 15,000 mile service (plugs, etc.). I'm seriously considering doing the valve adjustment myself when the time comes. Are you aware of the local NoVa lists (www.dorkiphus.com)?

Just now noticed that you're in Fredericksburg. You should chat with Dave Planakis at Hartwood Automotive (out Route 17), 540-752-2300. A very competent mechanic on anything. ASE certified in every discipline. Hope this helps. (Very nice C4 you've got.)

Very nice car and welcome too!
On the subject of prices I guess what we have in the UK is not going to be too relevant, but can tell you that a full 12K service with valve adjustment will run more than that here.....

Hey Dan,
UK prices not withstanding, I would agree with your initial assessment that the $830 quote is high. Remember, all they're really doing is changing plugs and adjusting the valves, which can be turned around in less than a day's labor (for them, not me ). Here in So. Cal., if you stay away from the dealer and "premium" independents, it should run close to $600. I even had the service performed once at the Porsche dealership for $500--with a coupon I got in the mail.
$830 wouldn't be so high, if it included caps and rotors--close to $200 in parts.
Anyway, here's hoping you can find someone (hopefully recommended) for closer to $600. Oh, and nice looking ride, welcome to the neighborhood.

Dan,
I recently had a major repair performed at RPM Inc., in Newington VA (a few miles south of the beltway in I95, phone 1.703.550.8240) and I was pleased with the work. The shop specializes in Porsche and both owners race.
Another shop I talked with and got good vibes from is ASG (www.autosportsystems.com), in northern VA inside the beltway. There other good shops in the area.
The local PCA has a website you might find useful, www.pcapotomac.org.
Cheers
