Default ITS A BIT SMOKEY AROUND 'ERE!

'90 - C2 - 964.... wind her up & let her go most days to & from work... but when I pull up at home / work, theres a cloud of smoke coming from the back right wheel... smells like burning oil... had pads changed - not that... had the car 2 years and it has always been the same... been serviced twice but found nothing.... also noticed there is now a loose 'rattling' from the rear end (thought it was the oil pan but that seems solid).... the paintwork on the right wing has also faded over the last week.... all the dials read OK ... any idea's please?

albi, derbyshire UK

Well, to state the obvious you really need to find out where the smoke is coming from. Also, does it only smoke when you are idling or also when you are driving along (it can be difficult to see, but make sure you check).

Could a tire be rubbing? What size rear tires are you using? and do you happen to know the alignment settings?

I have a friend that found that he had a fine mist of oil all over the back of his 964, which only occured at high revs on the track. New seals at the back of the engine took care of that.

There are some oil lines in the RR fenderwell area. Maybe you have some weeping? Have a look with a flash light..

Smoke in the right rear well is usually from the oil lines up there leaking.

Hi Albi,

I had exactly the same problem on my C4. After a fast drive, white smoke would come out of the right rear wheel arch. It smelled like burned rubber... or oil.

I discovered in on my way to Le Mans. Sitting at a road-side restaurant, a guy walked up to me and said: "Excuse me, Monsieur, I think your 911 is on fire."... Life turned to slow-motion as I ran to my car in a cloud of cutlery, tableware, the remains of my lunch and a kid that got in the way.

The problem was a leak in the oil line where it connects to the oil filter. It is located behind the wheel, right above the exhaust. The leaking oil drips onto the exhaust pipe, creating smoke.

To detect where the oil was leaking from, I took off the rear wheel and washed down all the pipes, exhaust, etc... Once all the dirt is gone, it is easier to see there the oil comes from.

Good luck!

Directly above your secondary muffler is the oil filter console and the oil return line to the oil tank. If you stick your head under your exhaust tip you can kind of see it, although the easiest way to check is to just pop off the rear wheel and look around.
