Engine rebuild? Mod?

I have my car check at a local specialist after i knowtice some white smoke coming out of the exhause. my mechanic check the spake plug and show me some oil residue on it. So he said at some point i would need a valve guild done.
I want to keep my car as long as i can so i guess it will have to be done sometime. Question is there are some mode that i can do to improve while the engine is out? I want to get all the seal done.
what i found out after searching from the site.

Raceware connecting rod bolt.
some port work which is recomended by my mechanic.
cams? which? will it work with tip?
anything eles that would be practical, (for example 3.8 upgrade wouldn't be)

thanks again for your help and knowlege!

All of our engines will smoke a bit with a start. Because of the boxer engine construction there will be always oil left in the cylinders because they are horizontal . Ordinairy road cars have vertical cylinder position, so oil will drop to the lowest point.

As long your oil consumption is pretty normal, 1 liter to 3 or 4 thousand kilometers, I would live with that.
Oil residu on your spark plugs, then your car should smoke like a old indian, I don't believe that.
As long the engine runs smooth, dos not make any wierd noices and as I said before, the oil consumption is ok, fingers off. You will be surprised how long the engine will last............

Arjan,
there was smoke before but more like what you describe. Lately it just smoke more and more and it started to get a little embarrass when in stop and go traffic.
when i deaccelerlate there would be a big puff of smoke come out (old indian?btw you mean native american indian right?).
My mechanic did say that it's doesn't have to be done anytime soon but i'm just trying to plan ahead. However the engine does run smooth. oil consumtion is about a 1 liter per 1200 miles.
You think i should wait till it get worst? or have it done now?

I ment a Amercan Indan smoking a pipe or haveing a camp fire... :)

If you have to translate into other language Jon, then some sayings get a different meaning.

Tenn, If the smoke comes out of the engine/exhaust if you are waiting for a traffic light , then there is a problem. It could be the valve guides yes. May be you should do a second opinion and ask for a good price on a top end rebuild only. I don't believe the rest of you engine is bad.

Ten, please tell us where you are located in the world, this talks easier.

I had this on my 964, turned out to be oil dripping from tiny corrosion perforations in oil tank onto exhaust. Very embarrasing big puff of smoke when I stopped at lights etc!

Make sure it's not this before rebuild!!

FWIW, when I did a valve adjustment and spark plug change, I found that the electrodes on one 'pair' of plugs to be much darker than the others (that were a light gray color). I suspected that the discoloration was from burning or leaking oil, and only reluctantly put new plugs in without knowing for sure.

Here's the link: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ght=spark+plug

Well, that was more than a year ago, and the car still runs perfectly. I get a little blue smoke on startup after the car sits for the night, but again, the car runs GREAT!

BUT... I was recently informed by my mechanic (who was doing a track worthiness inspection) that I have a head gasket that is just barely starting to weep oil. I initially panicked, but now feel that I'm going to drive it until it starts running badly or breaks.

Good luck with yours.

Erick

Tenn, I believe that some fans of the 964 board are suggesting that you fill in your location...we like that kind of stuff. ;)

As for the "what mods during a rebuild" quandry...I'll submit my two cents, being that I went through this exact thing a year and a half ago.

First of all, mods to a 3.6L 964 engine are NOT cheap!

So, that pretty much kept me to a stock rebuild...not to mention that I was going PCA Club Racing with the car and didn't want to build a "cheater" engine.

While I was tempted to have some light porting done to the heads, the cost and PCA rules kept me from doing so.

I had it in my head that I was going to use Raceware rod bolts, but after some investigation, I used ARP rod bolts...dunno if they offer any benefit over the Raceware product, it just seemed that I was steered in that direction by some opinions of experienced preparation "gurus". :)

I kept my rebuild true to form and only had a chip added, to compliment my exhaust mods and lightweight flywheel. What I wound up with is an engine that was VERY responsive and seemed to put out more HP...I have NEVER proven this on a dyno.

The reasoning that I probably do have more HP is pretty much based on the fact that my engine had 61K miles on it and leaked oil like a sieve...suspect most of it was coming from the earlier head/cylinder "gasketless" issues that most of the 1991 and earlier 964 cars had...so I'm guessing that I was losing power/response via that defect.

If I was in your position, and you weren't going to go racing with PCA or anything, I would get some light to moderate porting done to the heads and get a custom chip burned for the car, along with a reasonable exhaust modification.

Again, we don't know where you hale from, so I don't know what local rules/laws/regulations you're dealing with in regards to exhaust mods and so forth.

Let us know what you decide to do...and certainly get back to us with the results when you decide to have it done. :D

Thanks for the reply everyone! I am in Bangkok, Thailand(the land of smile:D well that's what they say but i think people are smilling less and less these day but still a pretty great place to live!).

Actually my car have 42k miles on it. The thing is, it doesn't have any type of record at all till the last two years! So i don't know if that is the true miles or not. I don't even know if it ever have a rebuild or head gasket fitted. I didn't doubt my mechanic because the car always run really hot here, the hot weather in Thailand can be murder! it's basicly 80-100 all year.

labor is cheap here, my mechanic who's work on all my friend pcar quote me around 900 usd for total rebuild and mild port work, exclude parts, which he is more than happy if i can supply him, he will just tell me what i need. I think the part with new rod bolt and all the gasket etc. should be around 1000 usd?

Jeff, you are right everything i look at is really expensive, so i guess i prombably stick with mild port work and straig rebuild. also i don't have much knowlege about this kind of stuff (cams)and don't want to be my own gunea pig! If there are some tuner like sport tech or 9m around here would be great but well..

anymore comment or idea would be greatly thanksful!

Tenn,
I would suggest not doing the port work unless your mech knows exactly what he is doing. Proper port work requires flow bench, etc but many mechs merely polish the ports and smoothen edges. There is a debate on whether polishing of the ports give more power. It might flow a little better because it's smoother but atomisation of fuel might suffer

You should ask for the new improved valve guides with high phosporus content. I read that it is more resistant to heat and hence more resistant to wear. You migh also want to look at the state of your clutch at this point.

I will be in BKK tomorrow (Thursday). Care for a drink to talk shop? I will probably be staying in the Sathorn area.
