Clicking noise in C4 steering

Recently my 1993 Carrera 4 Cabrio has developed a clicking noise in the steering. The noise can be best heard with the car standing still and the engine running. When I turn the steering wheel, I can hear a clicking noise. The noise appears to come from the footwell or the front end; it is hard to pinpoint. Sometimes the noise is accompanied by a moaning sound.

Does anyone know what is wrong with my car?

Thanks,

My steering made a moaning sound - when I was low on steering fluid.

Check the level in the resevoir - in the enging bay (near the oil dipstick).

If it's low - you may have a leak. Check the rubber gaiters on the steering rack - if one of them feels like it's full of liquid, then that's your problem (leaking oil seals)

I have a 94 C4 with the same problem. I have located it to the left hand side of the steering rack. I appears that the grommet that helps hold my rack in place clicks agaisnt the metal c- shaped bracket when I turn the wheel.

Have someone help you with the test. raise the car enough for you to slide under but keep all the wheels on the ground. have someone turn the steering wheel and see if your click is coming from the same place.

Let me know

I'd also be very interested to hear the results of this as only yesterday i noticed on my LHD 92 C4 a clicking noise when the wheel is turned from lock to lock with occassional groaning. My steering fluid level is between max and min so assumed it was'nt that. Not yet tried to localise the culprit but would like to know the cause and the fix if it is or will become an issue/problem.

Cheers.

Mine did that jjst before I needed a new rack!, when the fluid leaks it leads to this clicking noise as the system refills itself from the resevior (none technical explanation!)

Steering Ticking in C2

Rik, I may have an answer for you. I posted the same question a while back with no answer from the board. Ticks about 3 times lock to lock and most likely heard in parallel parking, backing up - or just turning at stand still. No noise in normal forward driving.

Just had it looked at by an experienced Specialist - Squires - He said it is likely the upper strut bearing or bearings. His suggestion - leave it alone till the struts need replaceing. (only have 50k miles so not ready yet) Said it was to expensive a repair - $300+ labor + ? parts - for just noise and he was sure it would not be a safety issue. I would suggest anyone with the problem get there own mechanics opinion, but that is my situation.
