The factory manual says 930g of freon 12. I know there is a difference from r134a, but don't know the exact number. I know that your running pressures will be higher with the r134a.

If you want to do leak checking yourself, all you need to get is a uv lightbulb(blacklight) and some yellow safety glasses.

Good luck,
Colin

Ah - OK, I've been told that you need less R134a so I'll assume 850 was OK. Apart from the fact that they thought the compressor was the other end of the car, they also told me it needed 1300g of R134a but fortunately I knew that was wrong and told them to add 850 (and watched them!).

Dave,

You put in the right amout of R-134a. The manual states 840g, plus 140 (+/-) 20 c.c. of oil.

Only 175g....that sucks. Well, at least you know your problem is a leak, if that's any consolation.

Er.... not much actually!

If it's something easy to get to then I'll be happy. If it looks like it's the evaporator I won't.

Understood. I never had a chance to post to it, but on Arjan's "what you're most afraid of breaking" thread, I would have listed evaporator failure right below major engine work. Basically, #2 on the list.

Do keep in mind that there are after-market evaporators available at a significant discount, as compared to the Porsche item. Somewhat analogous to the receiver/dryer. If you do wind up on this path.
