Changing teardrop mirror base
OK, I have now found the problem with the teardrop mirror seals that weren't fitting - clearly I have bought a set of mirrors advertised as having RHD bases which do not appear to have been entirely correctly advertised. That is, the driver's side mirror is RHD, the passenger side is obviously LHD. I only found this out as I was half-way to fitting the passenger side mirror!
So, questions are:
1 - Anyone know where I can source a new passenger side base at a reasonable price (RHD this time of course ...)
2 - How easy / feasible is it to dismantle and reassemble the base from the mirror?
3 - If step 2 isn't really a DIY job, who am I likely to be able to enlist to help?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give - any contributions to restore my sanity will be very gratefully received!!
Jeremy.

Jeremy see my recent post on installing the mirrors - it has links to all of the necessary DIY's. I used the method with the bolt, nuts and washers after having bad luck with the g-clamp (although I swapped out the hoop for some oversized washers and made a "tube" for the mirror bolt to pass through). Patience is key to this bit of DIY.

Thanks for this - this will at least help me to have a go at dismantling / re-assembling the mirrors. How easy did you find it?
Anyone got any ideas on sourcing a new RHD base at a reasonable cost? Don't s'pose anyone out there just happens to have one lying around?!!
Thanks,
Jeremy.

Well some people have found it fairly easy - I found it frustrating until I got the "knack" of it. Basically the spring surrounds a shaft that has three dog ears or prongs on the top that when seated properly fit into 3 grooves inside the mirror housing. You hafta compress the spring and push the shaft upwards until the prongs clear the grooves and then twist the shaft so it will drop out. Once you get it down its not so bad!
No idea on sourcing a base I'm afraid...

Jeremy, look closely at his avatar before you proceed any further!
Just joking. Howard's mirrors look very good. They're a significant improvement. Still, I'd rather not be following him...

Yeah, I saw Howard's avatar - hope my mirrors don't end up like that!!
The link to the article about dismantling the mirrors doesn't appear to be working anymore ... Yikes! I was just about to look up the details of how to take the mirror bases off, and now can't get them back - anyone know if there is another site with this info on please??!!
I'm not sure my car is destined to have teardrops ...
Thanks,
Jeremy.

Jeremy, I think I have the page cached (I downloaded in case it was down and I needed it in the middle of my install!) - send me your email and I'll send you a zip with the files!
Cheers,

Jeremy, you have mail! I sent the webpage in PDF format. I can't remember if it was originally in PDF or if I converted it. Either way this will be better than a cached file! I also sent the parts diagram from a PET screen print. Hope it helps.
