The Engine Pan-again-Mechanics opinion!
While chatting with my Porsche Specialist today after a minor service the subject of 964 engine oil leaks came up - I asked about mine - and he said "very dry compared to most" so no worries for me. But then he says "but let me show you a problem we are seeing on even the 993's". He walks me back to an engine stand and says "This 993 motor has only 40,000 miles and we had to pull it apart to fix leaks caused by (his opinion) excessive heat" He said this engine leaked from the case studs due to failed O-rings. ( I am not used to looking at 993 engines so that is my understanding of what he pointed to). He went on to say that premature valve guides wear has been seen at 30,000 miles. His next statement, "You have the engine pan off your car so you likely will not have these problems."
Just another opinion? - this guy has been wrenchin' Porshes for 40 years in his own shop same location over 20 years - I trust he knows Air Cooled Porsches.
I mentioned the frequent discussion on Rennlist about the engine pan and its worth. His view - Porsche put the engine pan on for "noise control" and it has little if any value for high speed stability. He even noted that the 993's have a smaller pan for better heat disapation. But I got the impression he believes 964's and 993's run to hot.
Now lets understand that any 964 or 993 with only 30 or 40,000 miles is not driven a lot. And here in the North West we can't drive at triple digit speeds. Slow traffic and mostly summer driving with high temps and the pan on??? This may be a USA issue - but I'll trust his experience.
