Default top speed of 1990 C2

Before I sold my 964, I had to try the top speed, of course. I've had it up to 255-260 km/h (158-160mph) on the spedometer a few times, but the old girl clearly had more to give.

Some facts: it is a ROW 1990 Carrera 2. 100% stock engine with app. 30' miles, original 16" rims with the right diameter tyres (205/55 and 225/50).

It was me and a collegue who took her on a trip one very early morning on a newly built autostrada. No traffic. Without hesitation, she reached redline i fifth and, as reported by others as well, settled on a steady hum just inside the red without hitting the revlimiter. The speedometer was indicating 283 km/h (175.8 mph) corresponding to a true 265-266 km/h or 164.7 mph according to the G5003 gear chart.

It was undramatic. I could take my hands of the steering wheel, which I didn't do, but I could've ...

That's pretty impressive for a almost 15 year old car.

cheers

My experience is that when I drive in Germany my speedometer gives at te top 285 Kilometers per hour. I think this is about 270 Km per Hour. I have a cup bypass and drilled airfilter box, 17" Cup wheels. Obove the 250 Km per Hour it gets quiet in the back of the car.................

I don't know about anyone else, but when I get over about 135mph (on the autobahn - of course) the tops of my doors start to let wind noise in - does anyone else experience this? Apparently there is an aftermarket fin that attaches to the A-post to alleviate the problem. I don't mind the noise, but it tends to wake up my passenger seat speed limiter (wife) and gives the game away...!!

I was chatting to my mechanic about it and he was telling me that they maxed out a tweaked Testarossa on the way to Le Mans, at 185mph you could see daylight through the tops of the doors as they pulled out and at 195mph the wing mirrors folded back........

Well, i have a chip, bypass pipe (muffler), and a drilled out airbox with a k&n and i reched an indicated 183 mph with my passenger watching the gauges. I watched the needle pass 180, and that was quite a thrill. Any idea how fast I was actually going?

If you hadn't said "mph", I'd have thought you were talk kph!

I'm highly skeptical with those minimal mods that you came anywhere close to 180mph. Where we you attempting this high speed test?

Talking

My 1991 C2 (17" Cups) does 265 km/h (verified with GPS on multiple occasions)
Indicated speed is about 283 km/h

At that point I hit the rev limiter in 5th gear. I.e., if your car hasn't been modified (gearing ratios or wheels with a larger circumference), it would be quite difficult to do more than 265 km/h (165 mph).

Cheers,

JW

Yes, it always surprises me how quiet it is inside such an old car when doing 250km/h

Cheers,
