Luk Flywheels and 1990 964's
Hi everyone!
I just got my car back today from its major service + had the clutch replaced. Yes, it's a day to be thankful for credit cards with high limits.
Anyway.... I was looking at my old clutch and flywheel. The clutch had over 100,000 miles on it, and was ready to be replaced. The interesting thing was the flywheel -- the old one was a Luk. All along I thought I'd gotten over 100,000 miles out of the infamous Freudenberg flywheel. I am the third owner of the car; when I bought it in 1997, it had a pretty good stack of receipts, and none of them mentioned a flywheel replacement.
Since my car is a 1990 model (date on the door jamb is March 5 1990), this leads to a couple of interesting possibilities:
A. The flywheel was replaced by one of the previous owners, but they didn't put that receipt in the stack of receipts.
B. The factory put the Luk flywheel in some of the 1990 cars. My mechanic mentioned that this might be a possibility.
At any rate, it sure is nice to have a new clutch. I can't believe how quickly I get to the friction point.

Melissa,
I wish I was so lucky. I have an early 964 too. It was made in March 90 and had the bad flywheel which I had to replace with a LUK in '94.
My bet is that its been replaced and the receipt is missing.

Melissa:
I'd bet on it being installed by a previous owner as well. The Freudenbergs were notorious for failing early in the cars life. On the local PCA site I must have read about 10 accounts of them failing before 25K miles, and several of those had failed at under 10K miles. Mine failed in the high 20's.
If it happened early enough in the original owners life, maybe the shop didn't completely document the change since it may have been under warranty.

Dear Melissa,
The LUK was installed post delivery. No 1990 model was ever fitted with a LUK at the factory. No C4 was ever fitted with a LUK at the factory only C2s.
Testing of the LUK DMF in a 911 was started circa November 1990 but its factory production line implementation was somewhat delayed and in the end limited to the Carrera 2 range which includes the RSA.
Ciao,
Adrian
