airbag replacement - it's due for all of us...
As our cars reach that certain age - from the general recommendation the airbags are leaving their useful lives.
Is the dealer the only source for airbag replacements? Do they make the original style still, or is an updated wheel the only way to go? The dealer is shut today, otherwise I could call, so I thought I'd probe the Rennlisters to see what they've been through.
Ruairidh posted a nice pic of his replacement - I kinda like the original four-spoked wheel and would like to know my airbag is still up to par.
Have a lot of you guys replaced it yet?

mine is one of the last (Sept 93) UK-spec right-hand-drive 965 turbo 3,6's, but with a single (i.e. driver's airbag) only - as far as I know, the first RHD 911's to have had two airbags, were from the 993 era - 1994 onwards.

easy !!!!!!!!!!!
4 8mm bolts to take off the hockey stick knee pads
2 10mm bolts to fix each side bracket (not sure , but i may have ground bits off to fit these .
re-fix 4 8mm bolts and its in !!!!
the hard part was getting the original dash glovebox to open .............
i tried everything by moving hinges etc.
there was no way to get it to fully open ;(
in the end i ground off the hinge section , and fitted some extra-strong catches to the inside of the lid .
so you pull the full lid off , rather than opening it on hinges .
i'm gonna fit a cd changer and mp3 player in there i think

10 year Air Bag service check
In the US all 964s have dual airbags, I think from '90 or '91 on. The Porsche recommendation in the owners manual is for a service check of airbag function at 10 years. Apparently this is a computer or other electronic device check. I had mine done at an independent Porsche shop(a "9288" was used to check fault codes). No cost was noted for this check as several other minor service issues where done at the same time. I have never read anything about these devices "aging" like the new 6 year life limit on tires. Would like the experts to answer this though I trust my local shop.
