Default Tip Tronic............ I expected more......not impressed.

We had a 993 Tip Tronic in the shop for two days. Did some brake repairs and tire work. The car was a 1994 993 with a 121000 km's on it.

I drove the car for while because it had brake problems, and the big deal was that air was in the system. While driving the car I noticed that a tip tronic is pretty anoying. I am glad that my car is a stick shift one.

It's not comfortable to drive a tip tronic on the track I think. Did some pretty spirited drives, but I was not impressed. No tip tronic for me, sorry.......

Actually - I'm surprised. I'm also happy with my manual, but every comment I've seen about the Tips (including from many people saying they didn't originally want one) have been very positive.

Ian,
I've just noticed your signature (which I suspect is fairly recent). Very funny!

It's a model 95 993, I suppose it's one of the first ones.
Vin number WPOZZZ99ZRS31XXXX

I try to explain the experience I had.

If you want to pass a car quik or a fast acceleration, the gearbox hassitates, and the engine rev's pretty high. By changing gears from 1 to 4, it was not smooth. It felt not comfortable driving the car, especially under spirited driving conditions. The best way to drive the car was with the manual selection, but not my kind of a'sportscar' gearbox.

I am sure there was no problem with the gearbox, but the thing took too long in shifting gears.

My opinion....... may be other are happy with a tip tronic. Good for them.

Arjan, I'll let you know after my 2 day DE this weekend at Willow Springs International Raceway. See you in a couple of weeks.

Let me know how poor it is when you are stuck in a huge traffic jam, and going nowhere real fast.

Default Reply from a happy Tipser

Arjan,

"If you want to pass a car quick or a fast acceleration, the gearbox hassitates, and the engine rev's pretty high. By changing gears from 1 to 4, it was not smooth."

As a happy owner of a 91 964 Cab Tip I find your comment puzzeling? Maybe in my old age I have slowed down, put my Tip downshifts Right Now when asked even at part throttle. At freeway speed 50 mph, it drops down 2 gears and really gives a kick in the pants, and this is in "D". I have read reports (and statements from Porsche) that the tip is every bit as fast as the stick from this speed up. Driving in Tip mode I get quick response to the Tip downshift. And as for smoothness around town, this trans is better than my wifes Toyota or my Audi A6. My box has 45,000 mile on it and the car is all stock. Could there be that much difference in the 993 box or is your example in need of repair?

And a comment for all you Purest - enjoy your shifting ... in traffic? And the cost of a new clutch is? Yes I had a choice and I bought this Tip car Twice!
I'll admit to not being 30 something anymore (unless you do 2x), and have had some back issues that make clutching less fun. But keep an open mind guys, the Tip is good for some folks and is every bit a Porsche.

Happy Tipster in Seattle, Jack
