hehehe !!!
chased one round my golf engine-bay for 2 weeks a while ago .
it sounded like it came from the back , but when you put your head there to listen , it sounded like it was coming from the left , when you put your head there it sounded like it was coming from the right . when you put your head there......... etc. etc.
first i ran my hand over all the hoses , rubber sleeves , jubilee clips etc. while a mate reved the engine ............... nothing .

then i tried the usual trick of spraying "easy start" , it didnt work !!! i was spraying everywhere apart from where i eventually found it
easy start gives the engine a boost , so , when you spray it over inlet side of engine , it gets sucked through the leak and the revs rise , hey presto !!

in the end , i used a full tin of easy start , then tried with wd40 .
basically i got fed-up and sprayed all the top-end of the golf . wd40 rand down and settled in a place i didnt think to spray !!! (where inlet manifold bolts to head )
rather than find the leak for me , the oil collected and plugged the leak !!

(not permanently , just long enough for me to figure out what had happened)

I've used a hand held propane tank, turning on the fuel, but not igniting it! If you have any air leakage anywhere on the air/fuel intake, the propane will cause the revs to increase. Again, sorry if it's obvious, but you use the propane tank without lighting it!
