Default Damp starting?

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question to see if anyone has experience problems starting there 964 in very damp conditions. My car let me down yesterday (only days after singing its praises ). It would fire but not catch after sitting out in the heavy rain. DME relay/battery/fuel filter/iSV all new or cleaned and the car was fine this morning (garaged overnight) and again just now.

Have people had problems with water/condensation getting into the plugs/HT leads/Dist caps/electrics causing this? I've bought a load of 'wet start' sprays and will investigate further this weekend. Dont think its a major component 'failed' as working fine at the moment. Never had a problem in the 3months of ownership and its been out in the rain plenty but could be cumulative i suppose .

Cheers
Giles.

Not heard of anyone reporting this before. Could be O2 sensor - non-Porsche ones are not waterproof apparently - but this is only true if the car was not completely cold. The O2 sensor doesn't switch in until it's warmed up a bit.

My car occasionally won't start when it's warm - always starts immediately if I put the pedal to the floor and try again though. Mine isn't water related - just seems to be random and since I can always get around it I've ignored it.

Cheers Dave,

I had a few idling issues before but with help managed to sort out via changing the DME relay/Fuel filter/new 74Ah battery + optimiser and a good ISV clean. Had to get towed last night and if it happens again it'll be getting towed to a specialist.

When i did manage to get the car started (typically after the tow) it kicked out a fair bit of white smoke suggesting water ingress or water in the fuel. May even have smelt slightly rich at first when running. Runs fine today in heavy rain (think the O2 sensor is original) so maybe was just water in electrics which WD40 chased out. Fingers crossed but will be investigating myself at the weekend and coating the important bits in anti-damp spray/sealant. Just looking for anything i may have overlooked as a novice mechanic. I have Adrian's book and am trawling through that aswell but most symptoms seem to suggest a component failure which i would think mine is'nt as it runs well today.

Many thanks
Giles.
