Default Digital display speed dial

Hi, I have a 1991 964 and the car is from America, and the digital speed dial is in MPH and I am wondering if it is possible to change it to KMH without buying a new one?

Unfortunately not possible. The 964 OBC was made in various configurations with different part numbers for each market using specific combinations of miles, kilometers, liters, US gallons, Imperial gallons, degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit etc. Remember these were built back in the days before an entire computer could fit on a chip the size of your fingernail. The good news is, if you do swap out for a unit with a different set of measurements, it's all plug and play.

Cheers!

Thanks for your response.
so from what I understand is that I have to replace the whole unit? Or can I replace just the lcd?

I have had these apart and the internal electronics are separate from the LCD so you would have a very tricky job trying to swap internal parts. I can't imagine any advantage to risking damage to the aging internal components by dis-assembling the units rather than just swapping the entire thing.

FYI, Years ago I actually swapped in an OBC tach to my non-OBC car as a DIY project. Because I wasn't aware these were optioned by country, I mistakenly bought the US version of the OBC Tach. Fortunately I eventually found a fellow Rennlister who wanted to swap his Canadian (liters, kilometers) unit for the gallons/miles version I had bought.

Good luck!

You can have the LCD swapped. I had this done in Germany by https://cm-instruments.de/

The cost was 275 EUR. State side, you can do it at

Palo Alto Speedometer, Inc.

As far as I know is this not just a simple swap. The LCD panel and internal microprocessor are different in the various versions of this instrument.
I guess CM instruments changed both the LCD module and internal PCB.
Cheers,
Tore

That is entirely possible. All I know is that I sent them a working tacho with LCD display in Farenhait, miles / MPGs from US imported car and got one back that was in Celcius, km and L/100km. The display used looked to be brand new. The total cost of this modification was 275 EUR + shipping.

I'm super pleased with the outcome.

I am not disputing that you got a kilometer version back.
It is perfectly possible to exchange the internals to obtain this result. This is especially the case for companies that do a lot of instrument repairs. I have both mile and km versions in stock, and have mi->km and km->mi requests every year. According to the information I have, did the microprocessor not have enough code memory to be made as a general type with an external jumper or similar to select mode. There are many versions of the 993 OBC: miles/gallon/°F, km/liter/°C, miles/gallon/°C, with std or 92L tank.
Cheers,
Tore

No disagreement here.

By saying "that is entirely possibe" I meant that what you have said may be correct.
