evaporator leak
I've had the diagnosis that my evaporator has sprung a leak. Since I have access to a lift and the tools I'm pretty sure I want to tackle this myself int he coming months. I've gone through the DIY posted. I've already been converted to R134A so the compressor is new and otherwise the system is working right. I will want to reconnect the heater with new interior hoses as I have removed the rear feed tubes in the wheel wells (I can afford to have them out long term in Miami) so those will also be replaced.
Other than the DIY article, I'm going to hope for some live forum assistance in case of questions. Planning to do the work at a friends house so it will need to be a few days of continuous work. A local shop will be employed to evacuate the system and recharge once complete. Now shopping for parts. If anyone can tell me where to get the Volumes I and VI of the workshop manuals that would be great. I have no manuals. |
Lots of work to get to the suitcase from what i've seen so take some time to check all the flaps, seals, etc. What evaporator are you going with? I most likely will need to do this as well soon but also need to add back all the AC lines and compressor since mine were removed by PO owner.
I have all the workshop manuals in pdf. I'll pm you a copy. |
The workshop manual can be found here: http://early911nzdownloads.yolasite....op-manuals.php
Good Luck Uli |
Buy an all aluminum evaporator to prevent future failure. The stock copper/aluminum unit will corrode and leak where the two metals meet.
I got mine from FVD. If you didn't convert your lines to barrier hoses, now would be a good time to do so. You will find that the rubber on all the dampers in the suitcase has deteriorated. You should replace it all to stop warm air from infiltrating the system. Same with the seals between the suitcase and the body and the suitcase halves. All are available from Porsche and aren't expensive. Remember that any seals that look good today might fall apart a year from now so don't cut corners on this. |
Wow! Thanks, guys for the excellent advice and the manuals will surely be helpful! I'm sure I can handle this and there is no going without AC in Miami. It will be a month or two before I get to this, so I have time to gather parts, make the right choices and be ready for a nice long weekend project.

Last I checked FCP Euro has some oem Evaporators in stock.
I would've suggested Griffiths but they have been plagued by supply chain issues and theirs is not available. Otherwise, they have a very efficient evaporator on the market https://griffiths.com/product/porsch...ce-evaporator/ |
I have a new in box behr evaporator, PM me if you are interested.

If you address every issue, it will take weeks.

Not sure what you mean. I have a new compressor already. The system is working. Elaborate, please.
Replacing the foam in the suitcase will take a few days. Wait time for seals coming from Germany will eat up a week or two. |

I'll go through that pain again for a/c that's as good as I can make it. |

I preferred the Griffiths plate and fin evaporator as it is far more efficient than the fin and tube stock one. Last year Griffiths told me that their supplier stopped supplying the material they used to make them and they were going to need to re-tool for a new material. They anticipated it would take a year to do this.
