Working on some options for updated rear lights

Working on a project for a customer who wants to get some updated lights on his 964.
This is a rough concept of one of the options. What do y'all think?

Nice work! I’ll be curious to see it mocked up on a car. The lines look clean. What other options are being considered? Were you able to solve your space question regarding the transformers?

darylbowden 02-10-2022 01:25 PM

I think it looks good but the main problem with the rear lights is the plastic that Porsche uses turns pink. So whatever you end up with, you definitely don't want to use the OEM Porsche plastic if you want them to stay looking nice for more than a few years.

It looks somewhat similar to the 9eleven night bloomers solution for the 964 (that allegedly will be released this year) so would be careful of that.

Thanks! Other options would be repeating the same strip at the top across the entire back, or having only the Porsche lettering light up red. Maybe frame the taillights all the way around.

Yes I am planning on addressing the color of the lenses and reflector to be red. Even the after market lens replacements from Denmark actually come in pink instead of red :)
As for 9eleven, I am not in their league and not aiming to be. Their bloomer is a completely fabricated piece where I'm trying to create a low(er) budget modification of the existing taillights and center reflector. :)

Very cool - looking forward to seeing your finished product. Wish you all the success, I'm sure you'll have plenty of people asking for one when you're done!

that looks great. Really adds a modern touch.

playswithcars 02-11-2022 02:34 PM

Next iteration.
This makes me think that adding a strip at the top of the center reflector would look really good in combination with the taillights done this way.

sooner964 02-11-2022 03:11 PM

I agree, I like the surround best so far.

klokwerk 02-11-2022 03:22 PM

Agree, I like the strip going all the way around the perimeter.

964Luftballoon 02-11-2022 03:44 PM

Looking forward to progress on this. What's planning to be released by 9eleven while nice looks too much like a Taycan. I feel modern lighting solution shouldn't look "too" modern b/c it takes away from the classic vibe (my opinion)

Agree with the others the full surround looks best

Completely agree! That is my main motivation for coming up with "updated" classic taillights for the older 911's. I don't like any of the after market options that are available for the 964/993/996/997 because they are too modern and look out of place on these classic cars!

darylbowden 02-11-2022 11:13 PM

Not sure if this is useful for you - but I have an old set of rear reflectors and taillights so if you need something to continue your proof of concepts on, I don’t mind giving them to you. Lord knows I’ll never do anything with them.

LOMartin 02-11-2022 11:25 PM

Gunther has a nice solution. Seems a mix of factory squares and the line you have introduced would be nice.

I'd be interested to hear how much these will cost. Are you thinking that people would send in their stock lights as part of the exchange?

They look good!

TheAbeFroman 02-14-2022 04:35 AM

Following with interest. My rears have probably got another year or so in them before I need to do something. Replacing them with new ones which are already pink just doesn't seem right. Add me to a list of potentials if you are making one. Nice work!

I plan on offering options where I provide the set, either new or used, and an option where you send in your set. Pricing will depend highly on the cost of a used or new set of lights, but to give you a rough idea, the strips alone for a double line across the total width run about $550 and then there's the wiring harness and of course installation. So without the lights themselves figure $800-ish shipped.

I'll let you know once I have something definitive to offer!

Oh yeah when they told me it was 9eleven I found it odd b/c he mentioned he wasn't going that route and decided with the lights he debuted. Eh, either way I just thought I would share

lacouelle 02-16-2022 02:22 PM

the only upgrade I could consider is the 9eleven Bloomers which are sober...the others being too much modern and anachronistic for me.

Still trying to make something like this work. Limiting factor right now i that the size of the logo exceeds the maximum dimensions of what I can cut on my Cricut machine...

I'm researching light options for a project as well. It looks like the company originally mentioned in this thread, www.OllisCustomParts.com, has started updating their website and adding products. It says they can do custom center lens lettering too. If anyone is looking around 964 light options:

Yeah they look the business. Not too modern, but enough to bring it up to date. Lovely. On the wish list.

Revvin_911 11-18-2023 07:02 PM

Has there been any update on this project? Looks like a great upgrade.

Love to see some pics lit up on the car. Looks like high quality stuff.

OP, let me know if you want me to delete those pictures. The pictures posted above are not the ones being built by the OP. These are lights by Ollis.

Pink to Red

I came up with a solution to the pink (faded pink) tail lights years ago. The use of a transparent rich red vinyl film to cover the tail lights and center sections. I have sold and ship the vinyl kits all over the world. I have had the vinyl film on my tail lights for over 10 years and it still looks great. So there is a viable solution to cure the pink look.
