Fan bearing on the way out?
Started up my C4 today and noticed this strange noise, seems to be around the fan/alternator and more pronounced at idle. Brief research seems to indicate either my fan bearing or the fan hitting the shroud. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance,

If you’re referring to the eerie whistling sound… mine was fixed with a new belt. It was more pronounced when I was running the lights which I associated with the alternator being under load.

Sounds like the fan bearing to me. My engine sounded similar a few years back. Agree on removing the fan belts and start the engine or with the belts removed, check for bearing wobble and noise if you spin the fan. Mine clinked as it spun. The blade tips were rubbing the fan housing. Before replacing the fan bearing, be sure to thoroughly inspect the fan for cracking. I had to replace mine and then discovered that a new fan comes with a fan bearing pre-installed, so I have a spare bearing now.

No question that’s a failed fan bearing. The ringing/clanging noise is faint, but it’s there. Have a listen to this YouTube video where the clanging is a bit more pronounced. Great time to convert to an RS fan hub!
