Okay, perhaps this seems a bit too PC but the SVT IS a very formidable track weapon. In the right hands and with sticky tires, it can hold its own quite well against our beloved porkers. And that exhaust note is not too shabby, either.

In a few short weeks, I'll once again be at the track with the American Muscle crowd and will take great pleasure in showing the field what a well-sorted, 13-year old, flat six can do but the SVT will not be an easy "kill", as they say on the rice rocket forums. And don't even TRY to take one on from a standing start--it would be frustrating and embarrassing (unless you have a stealth TT under the deck).

So good for you, Larry, for picking a worthy replacement. It may not be as "exotic" or "visceral" as your C2 but it's certainly no slouch in the performance department.

Yep, Joey you have a good point. And as every high school jock around where I live in Texas seems to have a "stang, I can testify that these cars are quick in a straight line too (note to self: must have more low down torque)................but that misses the point, at least my point. Which is I like my car and, while I'm happy for Larry, I personally just don't like 'em and would rather date Roseanne Barr than own one (and you have no idea how much that concept just doesn't work for me). I'd rather have an SUV. And I feel better today for being non-PC and non-964 board nice!

(Okay, you thought THAT was PC?)

Dear Ruairidh,

I completely see your point. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder and if the 964 hits the sweet spot fo you, well good on you, too! I'm certainly not scrambling to trade in my C4, either, for a more modern substitute but for those who are seeking new thrills, they could do a lot worse than an SVT.
Wouldn't you agree good friend?

Aye. Whatever floats the boat and all that. And I do wish Larry well and am sorry he obviously had a bad time with his 964. And I'm going to stop there before I get really reactionary and non-PC!!

All that and you only had the car a couple of months. Sounds like you got unlucky or didn't get a PPI. $ 10,000 engine rebuild, that is about what mine costs with light weight and titanium stuff every where.

Hey,
I've got a supercharged Ford. I tow my RSA to the the track with it

Ruairidh:
I have what you need to surprise the kiddos! As a matter of fact, the SoK C2 will give a spankin' to the 500 HP '64 GTO sitting in the garage next to it. It's hard to beat HP AND traction As much as I am an 'ol Muscle car fanatic, I would never expect one to stay together as well as my Porsche track weapons have over the years. I love them both but for completely different reasons.

Larry:
Good luck with the Cobra. They are great cars! Just don't go crazy with the boost mods It can be very tempting!

Jay, you have no idea how tempted I am. What do you think I was thinking about when I was typing that! And how much I know that I shouldn't right now. Maybe that is why I'm in such a strop today!

I do have a beef with modern day Fords. I think American drivetrains remain as good as anyone elses. I think the lack of care and quality put into the chassis (how many variants of Mustangs does that SVT's go back) and build quality/interior just drives me crazy. And the same is true of "vettes (although I've not been in the very latest) I drove a lot in the last version and couldn't get over how cheap it felt and looked yet the drivetrain was exceptional.

Now a '60's high powered yank tank, well thats another story.......

Anyhow, I apologize for being a grinch.

Larry:

Good luck with your Mustang....I hope you have better luck with it than you did with your 964. That said, I think, as others have said, that you just had really BAD luck. I don't use dealership mechanics but independent specialists for repair/maintenance work, and their work (except for one shop) has always been good, and quite honestly, cheaper than maintaining several other cars I've owned.

In any case, good luck and best wishes. When the time comes to replace my '96 Z commuter car, I may very well look into the new, upcoming Mustang (the one that looks similar to the original car issued in the 1960's).

Later.

Harry,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, you have every rights to sell that car and get another one. Hope you find what you want with that Mustang, it's a car with lots of character.
However, there is nothing like a Porsche. The fact that it handles well and with a beautiful sound from that oil/air cool engine and a Real classic shape is unique.
So surely, you did had some good time with your Porsche? Since you had spent so much in keeping it then you should be able to fletch a good price for it. There is always two sides of a coin.
So take it easy and enjoy your motoring!
Hope to see you back in this group.

Cheers!

I have read every post on this web site and those on Pelican as well. I have had it with these over rated, overpriced toys. Parts made of unobtainium exotic metal that cost 4 times what they are worth. $10,000 engine rebuilds, $100.00 oil changes, $60.00 relays that cost $3.00 to make, $700.00 oil lines, $600.00 torsion bars, etc, etc.

Crooked and incompetent alleged mechanics who are rude and overcharge you, or break something in attempting to fix another issue, and then deny the fact.

Flame away!
Larry, I posted a message like yours when I sold my 964 and have to agree with you, mention the word "Porsche" and the costs are huge, for want of another word they are taking the ****.I cant see how an older car justifies these over inflated costs,I'm sure the dealers and specialists think you must have an endless pit of money just because you own a Porsche. When I sold the 964 I bought a much lower mileage Boxster to keep costs down somewhat but I'm finding the build quality is crap, the interior is a sham a trim strip on the glovebox fell off last week and the radio has stopped working, I recently spoke with a 996 GT2 owner who says he's owned the car for 7 months and in this time has had two new engines, theres a guy in the states who's had five new engines in his 2.7 Boxster,I'm concerned every time I fire up my Boxster that the same could happen to me now the cars out of warranty.Theres no way modern Porsches are built as well as older models so how can you win, expensive wear and tear on an older car or a modern car thats not built as well.Has Porsche had its day? too bloody right, maybe I'll join you Larry with a SVT cobra mustang.

I can't help thinking that if you buy a 10-15 year old car and expect it to be 100% reliable, you are an idiot. And if you buy a Porsche and expect it to be as cheap to run as a mass produced family car, you are completely naive.

Yes - they are expensive to run, and I would prefer they were cheaper. But for me - and most other people who own them - the enjoyment of the car is payback enough. And since I can afford it, I would rather pay my expensive bills than have a cheaper / newer / more reliable car which I don't enjoy.

I think there is a little love needed for the 911 to forget possible high costs. Makes it easier.........

I agree, although I hardly spend any money on mine.

I appreciate your view of Ford, but I have a C-note that says you'd be crying in the morning.

Arjan B., you make a very good point. I think that the emotional attachment we have to our beloved Porsches may numb the economic senses sometimes. Notwithstanding the solid build, the dependability or lack thereof, cost of parts and labour for these cars are atrocious. If an owner does not receive a very high level of personal satisfaction (invigorating thrills) of driving a 964, then cost of ownership makes less sense than sleeping with Roseanne.

I've always been a fan of the Mustang, although I've neve owned one, or indeed, a Ford. The new '05 Mustang really intrigues me. Good luck with the new ride, Larry.

Syd

You either pay for the running costs now, or you pay for them later on a new car in terms of deprecation when you sell it.

It is a totally different story when you have a 964 or other car that is always breaking down or off the road - then it is about ownership satisfaction.

Cost-wise, I don't see much difference between a 964 and an Audi S4 in real terms. Some people prefer to take the depreciation hit because it's not a real loss is it?
