However, there wasn't alot of space between the tire and fender lip with that combination. Lowered height and alignment settings could affect this too. What alignment setting do you have in back and what's the height from the ground to the fender lip center?

Granted I am brain dead from a long day, but I can't picture how a 9x17 44mm offset/MPSC 255 could hit the fender lip and trailing arm. Having a wider tire hit the inner wheel arch is not too unusual, nothing a few good whacks won't take care of.
Bill,

With the camber set at L 1deg31' and R 1deg29' there was a slight rub on the right fender lip.
Camber was reset to L 2deg28' and R 2deg27' and there has been no futher rubbing on the fender lip.
Swapping wheels around I had previously noted rub on the left trailing arm and left inner wheel arch but only minor. On my last trackday I asked an instructor who has a lot of time in testing Porsches and a reputation for being able to set cars up to drive and comment on my car. He drove quite vigerously and swapping wheels after I noticed rub as before but also on he right trailing arm and oil line. One of the comments he made was that the suspension seems to have some compliance that suddenly stops causing the car to dig in and I have felt same (and was one of the reasons for asking his opinion). I had put this down to rubber bushes or most likely rubber top mounts but now I'm less sure. Wheels hitting the trailing arms/innerwheel arch could be the cause.

Present set up;

Camber L 2deg28' and R 2deg27'
Total toe +0deg22'
Toe per wheel L +0deg10' and R +0deg12'
Set back -0deg03'

I have spoken to 9M, my mechanic, and I will probably have the fenders rolled and use spacers.

I had considered posting on my experience with the instructor but am not entirely sure it's of any interest to anyone but me.

Tony,

Sounds like one of the problems moved side to side when you switch wheels? Possible issue there?

You sure you need a spacer? With a 44mm offset, you should be fine. A spacer would only move the wheel towards the fender more. I've got an effective 47mm offset on 10" rims and with everything fits very nicely (-2.5 degree camber). I tend to agree with you that something else may be going on in your rear suspension. If you were close by I'd say bring it around and we'd have a look.

I saw a 964 at Rennsport Reunion with BBS RE wheels on it.

The car looked very nice and had Hoosier 225/275 tires. The rear wheels used a 21 mm spacer and combination fit tight with rolled fender lips.

I took some pictures with a friends camera and will post when I get them.
