Leakdown results and oil use
Hi there,
I posted a topic a week or so ago about my oil consumption, about a quart every 500-600 miles, and it was suggested I take my cab in for a compression check and leakdown. I've been nervously waiting for the results, which just came in - the car looks awesome, 2%-5% leakage with 190-200psi. The only thing my mechanic could come up with is that we're using a very thin oil - a German synthetic, 5w-30 - he wants to do an oil change to a thicker M1 or GT1 synthetic and see if that stops the usage. Any thoughts on this? Thanks as always!!! |
Hi Rick:
Those leakdown figures are excellent. IMHO, you should not be using an oil that thin unless its well below freezing. If you use 15w-50, your engine will be much happier in your climate. |
What a relief that leakdown test has to be for you! No point in doing anything more complicated until you've tried a thicker grade of synthetic, tho I'm sure no expert. Joe W
