Arjan,
take a look behind your wheels and take a look at the spring (coil) you will see it's placed around (over) the shock absorber (damper) hence coil over shock. Hope this helps.

The softer spring does not do anything but holding the main spring in place while lifting the car from the ground. It doesn't take part in the suspensiontravel at all when the car is driven.
