I have always wanted a trio of PCars that all had their own unique experiences. I was debating an air cooled model before picking up a 997.2 RS and now that I have the RS the air cooled search is starting up again. There are so many models to choose from and I’m not an AC expert so I don’t know where to begin.

I have a few flimsy requirements for the next car so they are not set in stone. Feel free to throw out any suggestions as the below is a simple guide to keep the recommendations somewhat on track.

Use would be for tooling around town and the occasional drive up and down the coast in NorCal.

- coupe
- $80k or less

Current Pcars:

- 2015 GTS PDK Cab
- 2011 GT3 RS
- ?

930 turbo? Considering your healthier budget I would think something more unique would be in order. You have a nice sunny day comfortable car, a track oriented weapon, what about an old Widow Maker?

Or, change the game up completely and get a 365? You can pick up one in good condition for around your budget, definitely more of a tooling around/cruising car.

Given that you asked what air cooled car you should buy- on a 964 forum...I'm going to go with the following:

A 964

My pref is a 964 C4 coupe. But i am biased. Regardless any 964 you buy will be a great car. It will cost you a ton of money to sort out. And if you don't plan to do your own work, it'll be a bit more than a ton (this is after the 80k you spend buying it). But- it'll be the best car you have ever owned.

I am a bit biased but none of my choices would be at $80K.

1. 993TT - pinnacle of air cooled turbo technology.
2. 964 C2 - put a 3.8L in it and shed a few hundred lbs.

993 NA is not as much fun with North American gearing. If choosing just one aircooled, then do a 993NA with 3.8L and euro gearbox.

At $80K, then get a 993C2 for $50K and source a euro ratio gearbox separately for $15K. It will feel like its got an extra 50hp. You can always swap stock back in and get 80% of the euro gearbox cost back. Leave yourself $15K to sort the car out.

long hood, 964 C2, 997 GT car (ANY of them are awesome). I'm maybe biased.

Thing is, you'll probably not be happy with the 964 stock as delivered and want it a bit more hard edged if you like driving a 997 RS in anger.

Long hood, you'll need a larger budget.

My personal opinion on 993 unless its a turbos, gt2, or rs, not really interesting to me.

I’ll throw a slight curve ball into this, you can get a nice 964 C2 Targa for less than your budget. It’s the best of both worlds, around town you can leave the top on and have the security of a coupe, on the coast you can take the top off and enjoy the ocean breeze combined with the air cooled flat 6 music.

Personally for your intended use I wouldn’t spend much money reducing weight or hopping up the engine regardless of the air cooled car you choose. I would however upgrade/update the suspension.

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I have a thread on this topic posted in the 997, 964 and here on the 993 forum and based on the feedback I've narrowed it down to the following in no particular order.

- 993 - 97' Carrera S, Coupe, Manual - This is the only model where I have a clear pick of year and type. I like the wide hips of the S and with the 993 being the last air cooled 911 it could be a choice that I wouldn't regret. I pulled these pictures off the www ---- Stunning. It would require a bump in budget but exploring the models I really 'need' the wide hips of the S. Just makes the look IMO.







964 Turbo / 930 Turbo - These are my other two options but I'm a bit lost on year and engine options.





I did absolutely love the 79' 930 turbo in the Schandling episode of Comedians in Cars:








Any help on sorting out the two turbo choices would be much appreciated. I will also post over in the 964/930 turbo forums for more feedback as well

Out of the cars you’ve narrowed it down to, I would go with the 993 C2S. To get a nice example of the other two will put you much higher than your budget and for around town which is what you state is the intended use the power band of the C2S will be much easier to use.
