Apparently 3rd in line. I got pretty excited at the thought of this being a FS post, and possibly scoring a manual rack. I was wrong.

Is the actual rack ratio different than the hydraulic rack? I remember reading a post where someone just took the lines off and sealed the holes and ran the hydraulic unit as a manual rack...

Have you tried Freisinger ? They usually have the rare stuff.

From Bill V in 2012:

911 is ~3 turns lock to lock, non assisted
964 is ~2.81 turns lock to lock, assisted
993, 993RSR & 993GT2EVO is ~2.47 turns lock to lock (2.73 for 993RS), assisted
964 manual ~2.6"

Wow so the RS rack offers faster steering response, surprised that we all haven’t made a push to get Porsche to start building these again. I know I would have loved to have one when I had to replace mine.

When I did some research on this - most people who had experienced both much preferred the assisted rack. Apparently the livability far trumps the benefit/nostalgia/rareness/bragginrights/whatever

Sorry I should have noted that my vote would go to the assisted 993 RSR racks which have the quicker steering. To me that would make a huge difference in the tight corners.

Unless I’m reading it wrong the 993 rack is the quickest- assuming the throw of all these racks are the same.

It is. And why i opted to stay power assisted. With my setup have no desire for quicker turn in. It may make the car twitchy. . Having driven both the assisted rack in my 964 is my preferred setup.

but yeah they aren’t available. Try eBay if you haven’t. Try autobahn dismantlers. And last option is a 993 rack capped.

Several people noted that it's quite the workout using the manual rack on longer tracks or for endurance style racing. The general consensus seemed to be skip the manual rack unless you're building a dedicated short track car or you like to have sore shoulders at the end of the day. Obviously there are ways to "lighten" the steering through alignment and other tricks, but i suspect it will still be a workout.

I also saw people claiming 23-25 lbs. savings switching to manual by removing pump and lines. Apparently the pump is quite heavy.

I believe the weight savings. For me - I'm wanting to build an RSR'ish clone but with a few concessions. The RSA I drove was already pretty heavy, I can't imagine how much heavier it would be with the addition of wider front tires on a wide body. I'll do RSR + AC + PS

I have an RS rack in my widebody - run 235 Cup 2's on the front - it's only a pain at parking speeds, once you get going it's no issue. It's only an issue at track days if the track has a lot of hairpins - for me the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. IIRC the 964RS also has shims fitted to reduce the lock so although lock to lock appears low the rack itself is not particularly quick - I didn't fit these shims as I prefer to have more steering lock.

I can't see much benefit from my view.

1.02lbs ps cam pulley and misc hardware
0.74lbs ps reservoir
0.19lbs small reservoir hose and clamps
0.97lbs ps brackets on top of valve cover
4.53lbs ps pump, small pulley, and hardware
2.50lbs estimated remaining ps lines, long lines and front lines
= ~10lbs

964 bare rack weighs 9.6lbs. I wouldn't expect the manual rack is much less. Total savings will be about 10lbs.

lock-to-lock turns, shaft travel, travel per 1 rotation
964 with 6mm steering stops (16" wheels): 2.81, 123.7mm, 44.0mm/turn
964 with 10mm steering stops (17" wheels): 2.64, 116.0mm, 44.0mm/turn
993 with stock 6mm stops: 2.47, 120.0mm, 48.6mm/turn

I added 1° more caster when I swapped my 964 rack for 993. That dulls the steering a bit, but the difference in response was very little.
