4.53lbs ps pump, small pulley, and hardware
2.50lbs estimated remaining ps lines, long lines and front lines
= ~10lbs

964 bare rack weighs 9.6lbs. I wouldn't expect the manual rack is much less. Total savings will be about 10lbs.

lock-to-lock turns, shaft travel, travel per 1 rotation
964 with 6mm steering stops (16" wheels): 2.81, 123.7mm, 44.0mm/turn
964 with 10mm steering stops (17" wheels): 2.64, 116.0mm, 44.0mm/turn
993 with stock 6mm stops: 2.47, 120.0mm, 48.6mm/turn

I added 1° more caster when I swapped my 964 rack for 993. That dulls the steering a bit, but the difference in response was very little.
That’s helpful. I wouldn’t have expected a loss of feedback going from the 964 to 993 rack. I’m also surprised the steering response isn’t more noticeable.

I agree with others that going to a manual rack doesn’t make sense, the weight loss seems negligible and the cars drivability with wider tires will certainly suffer.

You forgot the power steering fluid which is super heavy

From a purely weight perspective its not such a huge win but if you add in the reduced engine drag, less clutter in engine bay & around front suspension, less seals to fail, less items to service, easier access to RH top valve cover/spark plugs and the fact it looks a whole heap cooler - it can be worth the hassle.

I was lucky to find a new RS rack at Freisinger many years ago. I only think of it as "heavy" when parking which I do maybe twice a year. I mostly drive my car on track or on open roads. I really like the feel of it and when I sometimes try another 964 I always think they feel a bit numb. Now of course my car is modified all over, especially in the front end but I had my rack before the 993 uprights an so on and it was the same. Now just even better. So no looking back for me!

And I agree with above. It's one thing less that can brake and it's easier to work on the car.

I was all set to go with electric power steering pump but now I think I’ll try the stock rack with no assist first. It can’t be that bad with such a light front end. All the other cars I’ve had are manual steering and my bmw 2002 even has a close ratio rack which admittedly Is heavy with r compound tires (205’s) in parking situations.

Anyway I can always add the electric pump later.

Assisted rack converted to manual should be drained of oil, have the lines between the assist chambers connected to ease with air movement and preferably have the main shaft (middle compression chamber) bushing removed. Without these modifications and with fluid in the rack you will be fighting the hydraulic forces as well as the wheel forces.

Thanks!

I have the 964 RS rack as well. Since my car isn't ready I haven't installed it yet.
I got lucky when buying mine as it was a real steal, as I hadn't planned on using it, because of aforementioned reasons.
I see them floating around here in Germany from time to time, but not sure what they ever sold for.

I had convinced myself that the PS was a. must-have... but the point you guys make for simplicity has me thinking about it again.

I have the RS rack. I’m a fan of the feel from non power racks however. Wouldn’t have it any other way for a track focus build like mine.

Street focus build I would keep the power steering and not care about the weight loss and feel. Prob go 993 rack in that case...

In 1998 I threw a RS rack in my 1994 Speedster with a 3.3 Turbo engine and Lower geared G50 52. Doing the same thing today to a 1991 965. Less is better.

I went with a manual rack on my track car and with the WB and 245's up front it was abusive to my shoulders after a long weekend on track. I ended up installing an electric pump and PS rack on my one track car and kept the PS on the other. So much happier now. I never found any pros only cons to the manual rack. Just wish I kept the manual rack on the shelf. Before they sold out they were only around $900 new. So I let mine go cheap. Today good luck. 993 PS racks are nearly $5k new and 964 nearly $3k. Glad I have a bunch I can rebuild which is not that hard to do.

Is Porsche even supplying brand new 993 power steering racks? I thought only rebuilt racks were available from Porsche dealers - I could be completely wrong.

I have an RSA which has a manual rack, I only have 205s up front just now so I find it ok once in motion even on the twisties. I will embark on a complete suspension upgrade soon and I am wondering is there anything that needs going through on the rack itself?

Thanks

There is an available alternative manual rack being manufactured and marketed presently by a place calling itself "The Machine Shop" no affiliation have considered one for myself , also an RS unit is on EBay presently .
I have a factory RS manual unit installed in my '95 Cup clone for mixed street / track use and a power unit in my GT for street so far happy with the combination ...Bert
