Default 964 C2 4.0L wide body lightweight rebuild

Hi guys, I thought I would share my project. I have recently bought a donor car in April this year. Its a 1990 964 C2 manual….in good condition and pretty standard except for KW V3’s and a recent paint job. The engine is pretty tired with 130,000 miles. See some snaps below.

The current plan is as follows:

Motor – the only thing that I am retaining is the crankcase. Target is >400hp:
- GT3 4.0L (80.4mm crank), GT3 intermediate shaft, GT3 oil pump
- Carrillo rods
- Custom 102.7mm Mahle pistons
- Custom 102.7mm barrels
- Custom heads from Xtreme cylinder heads
- Custom cams
- Custom rockers and other head bits
- ITB and plenum
- Custom stainless headers, GT3RS muffler
- Motec

Clutch & gearbox:
- RS lightweight flywheel
- 993 turbo clutch
- gearbox rebuild
- Guards LSD
- Rothsport shifter kit with golden rod

Suspension & brakes:
- Retaining the KW V3’s at this stage
- 993 RS front uprights
- Transverse strut
- New bushes
- GT2/RSR inner steering tie rod, tie rod extension
- Front brakes: Brembo 6-Piston, 355x32mm rotors, 2pc Floating
- Rear brakes: Brembo 4-Piston 328x28mm rotors, 2pc Floating

Chassis:
- Full strip (every nut and bolt coming off the car)
- Water blast full chassis
- Sunroof delete, replaced with carbon panel
- Seam weld
- 965 wide body steel panels and bumpers
- RS rear window and wiper delete
- Half cage
- full repaint (colour TBD)

Interior:
- Still deciding, but will be lightweight, but still usable

The build just started last week. Car currently being stripped and motor is out (see some other snaps below). I have bought most of the long lead parts with a bunch arriving shortly. I will post photos as I go with the build.

Hope you find it interesting and open to any suggestions people may have.

Cheers

Thanks and will do. Although I will be pushing this forward as quickly as I can, it will take a while. Cheers

That looks like a sexy plan. It's almost EXACTLY what I'm planning over on this side. I've already purchased most of the OEM widebody turbo parts. I'm also going to take it down to bare metal. Project is probably a few months from getting started (although I've been collecting the parts I have for almost a year now). Somehow ended up with 2 G50 gearboxes...one is factory LSD with some miles on it and the other has NO lsd but is essentially new...so decisions

I'm curious what you're planning for the carbon panel sunroof delete. I have the metal filler plate for that but would consider carbon...I'd like to see some details on how others have integrated that.

You might find that 965 rear quarters are 1 - not really available used that often, 2 - like $3k per side new from Porsche.... I'm looking into what others have suggested - getting the dansk ones for a 930 and the fabricating the 965-specific attachment points.

Excited to see this one go!

Welcome, what a first post! This will be awesome to follow.
Are you coming from past Porsche GT car experience or have you owned a 964 before?
What colors are you thinking about??

Thanks Jeff. I have bought the carbon roof in the UK and will share the details once my body guy gets it fitted. I have bought the full 965 rear quarters from Porsche. I am told the 930 arches are a pain to get right and the wide body shark fin doesn’t line up. So I bit the bullet and paid up.

I have modified cars before. But first time for a Porsche. Been planning for a while, so thought I would share the story. Suspect there will be some real learnings along the way.

Have a few thoughts on colours and I know for sure it won’t be guards red. Thinking maybe chalk. But have some thinking to do

BTW, keep us posted on your build. It sounds cool and keen to see what others do. Cheers

Engine out first

On the engine stand ready to have all the crap stripped off. If anyone is interested in 964 engine bits (crank, barrels, pistons, rods, heads etc then please let me know)

Sounds like a fun, albeit expensive project. Just gave you a follow, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Wow, that’s my dream build (and likely always will be just a dream). Following with interest.

@964George where did you get your side rear bumpers made (without the hole for the exhaust outlet)?

I know how expensive it's gone be if you do this by original factory parts as i did.
