did someone already retrofitted the bigger (airbag version) kneepad to a 1990 964 ?

Yep, I retrofitted it to my 1990 car. Relatively straighforward but required a couple of aluminium brackets at each end to give extra support.

did you need to drill holes in the body to fix the brackets ? Did you use the bracket in the middle (goes down to the console) ?

Yes a couple of screws in the centre console area. From memory I had to modify the centre console panel a little as something was fouling the larger kneepad. Its supported by screws in than alu bracket on either end. (drilled two holes each side into the dash metal panel but this is not visible even if going back to original).
