Default Carrera Cup Front Brake Cooling Ducts?

Where is the best source for the Carrera Cup front Cooling ducts? and are they easy to put in? I like the factroy ones, but can only imagine how expensive they would be. I am looking for a high quality part. I have seen some pretty crappy fiberglass ones at the swap meet and felt they were a bit to crudely made. I am sure the quality can vary by the manufacturer.

You can buy them through Porsche (check some of the Porsche dealers which discount up to 25% off list, which is about the same as cost + 15%)and other vendors. Mike Shaw makes a kit which fits pretty well. They pass air from the duct through a hose into the wheel well. Unfortunately, due to the ABS and 4WD hubs, there's not alot of space to pipe air directly into the rotors (although some have rigged some one-off solutions), and none of the good pre-89 solutions fit. Right hand side is pretty easy. Left hand side is a little more challenging.

I looked into this quite a bit last year and was disappointed with what I could find. Every kit I found brought air as far as the fender liner - NONE of the kits ducted air DIRECTLY to the hub/rotor. I just don't know how effective (no matter how cool they look) a brake ducting kit can really be if it stops at the fender liner.

One thing I've always been curious about is the hole circled in red in the following picture. Is the hole located there so that ducts could run through the front trunk and then to the back of the brake discs or is there some other reason for those holes?

Not sure why these are always referred to as Cup ducts. Cup cars didn't even use them in the original series! Many seem to have them now, but I'm not sure how effective they really are. Seems the foglight holes are good for allowing extra cooling air to the oil cooler though.

about the same time as I was looking for a solution in keeping the rotors to last longer, a friend came up with the same idea. Up till now I was going thru 2 front sets of drilled rotors a year. Now I did also go with Cryo-treated rotors this last time, So doing 2 changes, is not the best for exact results, but.. I ran them all last year, and they are still on car for Rennsport @ Daytona. What we did was cut 2 holes in plastic undertray below the steering tunnel. Then mounted to 1" x 5" scoops to (2)long hose that runs to each inside of rotor. Then just wire tie up.

For the C4s, I hear the best bet is simply to rout air to the AC and the oil cooler. I think that makes the ducts quite worthwile, and am strongly considering them.. Of course the look is half the motivation!!

If you are still looking for brake duct intakes to fit into the bumper, check out The Racer's Group. They have fiberglas ones for the 964 for about $100. You have to paint them, but the price is pretty good.

Is that for the whole kit or just the scoops? Just adding scoops gets more air to the oil cooler and a/c but doesn't do anything for the brakes.

The ducts were actually for the 964 RSR and had tubing that directly ducted air behind the rotor. Techart made beautifull kits that did the same thing with small scoops that mounted to the inner fenderwell that diverted the air. I do not think they are availible any longer but you could check. They were very well made kits. The scoops were a little bit different than the factory RSR version.

Best,

Don
