Don't know them. What car are you looking at. A well sorted 964 is hard to find and quite pricey. There is a gray one on BaT that someone through a lot of money at. The red one they have is an early M64-01 engine so you need to find out what if anything has been done regarding the TSB 9404. I would start reading here there are a lot of things to learn and the more you know about these cars the easier it is to not get burned. There were very few coupes made and even fewer remaining so most of what is for sale is either very pricey or needs lots of work. GL Your in a large pool of lookers with very few quality cars for sale.

Uhm. Aren't all businesspersons in it to make a profit? I sure don't work for free.

I'd just say make sure you REALLY want a 964.

Cobalt speaks the truth. No such thing as a good deal on a 964 any more. If it is well sorted it will be big bucks. If it is not, it will still be rather expensive. If it is well sorted it will still need a ton of work over time. They are all close to 30 years old. I've only had mine for about three years and have put a solid $5,000 + per year into it. I bought it knowing I would do so and fully expect to continue to spend that kind of money and more every year for the next few years to get it the way I want it. This is my 3rd Porsche and when I bought it I was driving a 991. But I REALLY wanted a 964. Still do and I don't regret the purchase or the money I continue to spend on it. But I went in expecting this. I think other potential buyers should too. GL with your search and please post photos when you buy one.

Just out of curiosity, is this expense due to repairs/maintencee, or optional mods/preventative work? I've had my 964 for 6 months so far and reliability wise it's been absolutely flawless, but I will admit I've gone off the deep end in mods to make it my own.

A Porsche that has deferred maintenance is still a fantastic car to drive, not to be elitist but if you have never driven a sorted car (nothing is fully sorted) you would think your car is right from the factory; perfect. Suspension components, motor mounts, oil lines, belts, hoses, brakes, tires, are not sexy and often ignored in favor of cosmetics. But they sure do make a difference and sadly, shop rates and parts have not declined since the car was new. The above can easily add up to $12k. And the car looks still exactly the same.

Maybe there is a slight leak, a few drops on the garage floor; no difference to performance but annoying if chronic. Could be minor but knowing these cars, could be fairly intensive; reseal being the gold standard: $10k. But then, you've been reading up here and now you have acute "while you're in there" disease. $20k rolls around shockingly quickly.

The A/C isn't really spitting out ice cubes and besides, when on, it makes an annoying squeaking noise. The sunroof seals are peeling, there is water in the car floor when it rains, hood shocks are shot and there is no tool kit and the spare is crap. $2k.

What fluids are in the car? Does ANYONE other than Anthony check them? Trans, diff, power steering. $500
What clutch/flywheel? These are the Rumsfeld "known unknowns". Did you want a chattering Single mass, if so add $4k.

You could easily add $30k to your PP without significantly trying nor adding any mods; $50k is indeed the new $80k. I always prefer buying a car "done" but I know the unknown knowns still add up; there is NO such thing as "fully sorted". That is an English second hand car dealer's term, adopted by us here, and means "you can probably get all the way home without drama".

^^ VERY TRUE

I picked up my Targa about 18 months ago (crazy how time flies) and I refuse to add up my receipts. The suspension upgrade started off as a small and manageable project but quickly snowballed into a nearly complete rebuild of the suspension. No regrets though, that absolutely transformed the car.

The Targa top was another one for me, what started off as wanting to eliminate the air leak in the front resulted in a complete rebuild of the top and new seals in the roll hoop to the tune of $2200!

I don’t know why but I feel like I need three sets of wheels for this car depending on my mood, never had that happen before.

So yeah some of the expense isn’t necessary but the thought of paying labor twice is a difficult pill to swallow so you quickly go down the WYAIT rabbit hole with any new project.

Worth every penny.....

YES!!! I thought I was the only crazy person who thinks like this. For me it's Cup 1s...Speedlines...and D90s...all for different moods. Have 2/3 secured, lol.

LOL. It is amazing how the 964 has become the Swan. People laughed years ago when you might suggest these cars would be worth anything. The dark years when perfectly good cars were chopped up for parts and a healthy profit made. The 964 is far from the hyper cars of today. I put some serious miles on a tesla P100D a few weeks back. 0-60 in 2.5 seconds on par with these beauties.

I unknowingly hit 108 in about the same as my turbo maybe a bit quicker but the numbest drive I have ever had the displeasure of driving, the model 3 was much better but felt like a Disney ride with no excitement. It is not the numbers but the experience and IMO very few cars can offer the experience a 964 or any air cooled 911 can. ^^^ these cars are amazing and incredibly capable but I prefer to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

Mooty's white car looks well sorted (as opposed to fully sorted ). Half the fun is looking.

Both but I would say the majority has been catching up with neglected maint.

Since I have owned it. And as you can see from line 2, it came with just under $6800 of receipts for recent work done.

Car ran great yesterday and we went to Pelican Parts C&C and then ran errands. I had two new keys cut and they work great. But the lock on the drivers side started to spin. So today I pulled the door panel off, and the door handle and cleaned everything. The screw that holds the lock in was loose (common problem) I applied lock-tite and put everything back together. I also order some of the fasteners that are missing throughout the car. The key blanks and heads were right at $100 from eBay along with the tools to remove and check the radio antenna so I added that to the PP total.

Discovered cracked trim panel on front of driver door. Dealer had tried to glue it. Ordered that plus clear reflectors for the front as well as elephant racing 5mm spacers for the front wheels and H&R 21 mm spacers for the rears.

Power washed all the wheel wells. Looks much better now but the passenger side valve cover appears to be leaking. So much for the receipt stating it had been re-sealed.

Also found more missing screws and nuts and bolts. SV Motorsports is a total HACK. Clearly horrible mechanics but I was told the owner Stephan did all the work. I have a VERY low opinion of him.

Replace PS high pressure line, PS Rack boots, cooling fan, alternator, added Rennsport PS rack bushings and bar. Changed oil and filter, all new belts – also the airbag light had come on about a week earlier. Sergio put it on the scantool and it said driver air bag. The steering wheel was off center once he finished his work on it so he removed and re-centered the wheel. Looks like a P/O removed the steering wheel and F’d it up putting it back on. Hopefully we have no further problems.

Airbag and Seatbelt lights came on again. Pulled clock and fuel/oil level gauges and sent them to NHWD Speedometer to have them rebuilt. The glass on the fuel gauge was a bit wonky so I sent it along with the clock. Often the electrical connections in the clock cause these lights to illuminate. Noted that the current clock is from 04/97 so this is not the first time this problem has occurred. Got the gauges back on 7/26/18 and took the car to GameFace to have the computer re-set. Hopefully this is the end of those lights.
