My '89 964 Story

Long time lurker but relatively new poster here - I thought I'd start a thread documenting the progress of my 964 ownership. I've owned the car for almost 5 months now, but I'll try to document this in chronological order of how the car came to be. A little background: the 964 has always been "the" car for me. It was my first truly memorable Porsche experience, the car that started this crazy obsession, and the car to which I attribute much of my success to this day. I still remember the first day I saw the car - I was about 12 or 13, and my Dad had taken me to a local Porsche shop on a Sunday while out for a drive. I took a look through the window into their showroom (they were closed, but the showroom lights were on), and there was a Guards Red 964 Carrera 4 coupe sitting front and centre. From that point forward I was totally fixated on this car. I went home and instantly started researching. I found sale listings in the AutoTrader magazine, figured out the average purchase price of the car, then broke that down into weekly savings goals, and figured that by the time I was 16 and got my driver's license, I could buy the 964. Sure enough, after a lot of working after school and a lot of saving, I found myself around the age of 16 ready to start my 964 search. I went online to pick out my new car, and to my surprise, the prices had doubled from when I last searched. Back to work. After a few more years of saving, and a few more years of market inflation that would constantly place me ever so slightly out of the market, I finally reached a point where I caught up and could comfortably enter the 964 market.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4c90b12839.jpg
Something like this...

So now the real search begins. If anyone has been searching for a 964 in the last couple years, you'll realize how scarce these things are unless you are willing to substantially overpay. I couldn't find a single car listed for sale that wasn't either A: a basket case, B: significantly overpriced, or C: a Tiptronic/Cab (nothing against these cars, they just don't fit the 964 picture I had painted in my head). I decided to list a "WTB" ad on a few different sites, and after about a month I finally received a decent lead. A car collector in Quebec City (about 1000km from my home in Ontario) reached out and let me know he has a few 911s that he would consider parting with..."at the right price". After some back and fourth, he gave me a few details about his 1989 Carrera 4 - the right colour combo (guards red on black), the right body style (coupe), the right transmission, and the right paperwork. We chatted numbers, reached an agreement, and arranged for an inspection at his local Porsche dealership - the dealership called and told me to buy it, and before I knew it I found myself on a one-way flight to QC. The owner picked us up at the airport, and after a short tour of Quebec City, this is what we arrived to.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...711fca33df.jpg
Guess he has a thing for red 964s just like me. The cabriolet was actually the display car at the 1990 Montreal Auto Show, for the release of the C2 & Cabriolet models. The owner saw it on stage and demanded he have that exact car.

After a quick look over, I handed him my cheque, loaded the luggage and hit the road. Next stop: downtown QC for lunch. What could be better than a red 964 traversing the picturesque streets of old Quebec on a Summer day? Well...turns out...a lot. We made our way into downtown on this 32 degree (C) August day (at least the AC blows cold, believe it or not) to explore, but as we got into traffic the car started acting erratically. The dash lit up like a Christmas tree, the idle became rough, then the car died. To make things even more exciting, we were near the top of a steep hill, in the middle of rush hour, on a Friday. A passerby saw we were having trouble and helped push the car up the hill & off the road - almost....as he was pushing he asked if the car was for sale...I responded no...so he stopped pushing. Anyway, we got it off the road and started to check the car over. After popping the engine cover & looking over the obvious potential culprits, I made a startling realization of a problem at hand; I realized I have virtually no clue what I'm looking at, and next to no mechanical knowledge. So I took advantage of one skill I DO possess, which was retrieving my phone and calling the prev. owner. He was already out for the evening, but was nice enough to send over his neighbour to the rescue.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...fcb241e4f3.jpg
At least it was a pretty spot to break down...

After a jump start, it became clear the battery was not holding a charge. BUT, if I kept the revs over 3k RPM at all times, the car would stay alive - so that's what we did. We limped back to the prev. owners house and swapped batteries with the newer one in his other 964. The car fired up perfectly and seemed to be behaving normally, so we decided to hit the road. The feeling of relief when I realized it was just the battery, and not a more serious problem, was immense. The friendly neighbour took us around the corner to grab a bagel from his favourite local baker, then briskly escorted us out of the city and onto the highway.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...0cb59b0f5f.jpg
Running like a champ now.

After about 20 mins of driving, I started to calm down from the afternoon's events. I got my seat into the perfect spot, connected my phone with some good music and settled in for the drive to Montreal. The car performed flawlessly for the duration of the 2.5hr drive to Montreal where we stopped for the night.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...20d6965573.jpg
Ste-Catherine St. was a good place to unwind after a long day.

The next day consisted of another 700km or so to get home, which the 964 ate up like nobody's business. There is no better way to get to know a new car than by immediately taking it on a great road trip.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...0288535931.jpg
Home & enjoying some local roads.

Though some of you already know me, I guess it is worth mentioning that, at 20 years old, I am likely one of the younger 964 owners you'll find on here. But don't be too concerned - I am equally as, if not more meticulous than most typical air cooled purists on here, and this 964 will be living a very pampered life (though thoroughly enjoyed) as long as I am the caretaker. It took a lot of work to reach this point and I am very grateful for the opportunity to enjoy one of these cars. Lot's of fun trips in the calendar already with some fellow Porsche owners!

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:10 PM

Now for a bit more information on the details of my car. As mentioned, it's a 1989 Carrera 4 Coupe. 5-speed, guards red on black. I picked it up with just over 81k miles on the clock, and a fresh engine rebuild under it's belt. The car is virtually bone stock, with the only mods being an early 2000s Blaupunkt radio, a drilled RS-style airbox, 993 brakes, and twist wheels. I got very lucky and landed a great example of a well cared for 964.

After significant digging, this is what I know about the car's history to this point: this example was built in Stuttgart in March of 1989, and is serial number 324 of about 1117 964's built for the US market in 1989. Apparently, in 1989 as part of a promotional launch of the new 964, dealer principles were invited to each collect a Guards Red 964 at the factory in Germany, then participate in a rally across Europe called "VentureTour", as an opportunity to learn more about the all new 911 model. Following the tour, the famous guards red 964 group photo was taken of all participants, then the vehicles were shipped home to their respective dealerships to be used as demos/showroom display models. This car was one of the participants, and was shipped back to it's dealership in Dallas in October of '89.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...76aed0fa72.jpg
I'm guessing mine is the red one.

The car didn't actually become registered with it's first owner until 1992 with about 6,000 miles. It stayed with it's first owner in the Dallas area until 2003 when it came to Canada. It's option list includes: California emissions/cat converter, Blaupunkt Reno SQR46, cruise control, amplifier, sunroof, and European delivery.

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:13 PM

Onto the modifications. My goal with the car is to retain a largely stock appearance - call it OEM+. Some Carrera RS inspiration, but nothing that will detract from the original charm of the car. I've started with ditching the twist wheels for a set of Cup 2's, and swapping the orange side markers for clear/euro lenses.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...91dbc5e6c0.jpg
Cup 2s are good for now, but Cup 1s are the end goal.

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:17 PM

While awaiting some more goodies to make the car my own (namely Bilstein HD shocks + H&R lowering springs to give the proper RS stance), lots of time has been spent behind the wheel with fellow Porsche owners. We try to get out once a week for a 45 minute drive and a meal, in order to receive our recommended dose of Porsche chit chat.

Jared, I follow your car on Instagram. You've got one of my favourite 964's...such a perfect build!!

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:29 PM

Next on the list was a set of Cup 1 wheels (again, working towards that Carrera RS look). I was lucky enough to find a set of real 964 RS America Cup 1s (sure enough, the day after I bought a set of replicas, hence the truckload of Cup1s). Refinished in the correct Porsche silver, tires mounted, and swapped onto the car. The stock monster truck stance is especially evident now.

...and installed

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:37 PM

After 4 months of back order from Bilstein, my shocks finally arrived. Off to my buddy's shop for installation. A group of 10 Porsche guys, a couple cases of beer and a couple large pizzas later - the 964 was lowered. Helps to have a group of friends who know what they're doing. After substantial research and chatting with other 964 owners, I decided the best suspension setup for my purposes would be Bilstein HD struts with H&R sport lowering springs. It cost less than $1600 USD for everything I needed, making it one of the less expensive options on the market, and had nothing but positive feedback from those who have done the same. The install was relatively straight forward, and I have lowered the adjustable shocks to 1 notch above the lowest setting.

The drive is night and day - handling is improved, ride is actually slightly softer on the highway, but slightly more firm when under load or during spirited driving (I'm assuming due to the progressive springs), and the stance is perfect. I ordered everything from Rick at Throtl.com - this was the only site I could find that actually offered all the components in one place, vs ordering from multiple sites.

You will notice I also purchased new bump stops and dust covers from the Porsche dealership before doing the install (was planning to update them while I was in there). I didn't realize the front shocks come with built in bump stops and dust boots, so I only ended up using the rears. The spacers and brake ducts will be touched on in the next post.

Much better.

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:39 PM

The car was promptly brought over to my local Porsche dealership for a Carrera RS spec alignment (with a slightly more aggressive toe to help with the AWD turn in).

No more monster truck ride height

Jarod964 01-01-2019 09:46 PM

Up next, a set of CultWerks brake ducts. A good friend decided to turn his 964 into an RWB, and the RWB kit comes with it's own brake ducts - this left him with a set of old brake ducts and nowhere to put them! About $100 at the paint shop to spray them Guards Red and they were ready to go. I prefer these ducts over the others because there is no exposed mounting screw - it's a much cleaner look, and install was a piece of cake. Removed bumper, drilled a couple small holes and mounted them right up (with the help of a couple articles here on Rennlist). I opted NOT to use these for actual brake cooling (primarily due to laziness and lack of track use), which can be done with some PVC piping. Instead they will provide a bit of extra air to the AC system and cooling system.

Perfect fit

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...7494914dad.jpg
They certainly make the front of the car look much more aggressive.

Jarod964 01-01-2019 10:09 PM

Another small but worthwhile mod added to the list - decided to replace the school bus style stock steering wheel (which unlike some, I do actually really like) with a smaller Momo Prototipo. This is less of an aesthetic mod and more for the feel of a smaller wheel, though I do like the way it turned out. I ordered the wheel in a kit that came with the 964 steering column adapter which is required - the Porsche horn button was purchased separately from Siera Madre online.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...53e4339e43.jpg
The stock wheel comes off very easily - just one nut.

After removing the stock wheel, I installed the Momo hub that came with my new wheel, carefully aligned the Prototipo and slid it on. The hardest part was making my horn work (though this was at no fault of Momo's). I put the wheel and horn button on, and for some reason the horn was not working. I assumed this was installation error and spend hours fiddling with the wheel and ground cable trying to make it work. Ultimately, it was just a bad horn relay in the frunk - completely unrelated, lol.

Success
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...7b73d9a1f6.png
In action

I was pleasantly surprised with the improved feel of the steering after installing the wheel. The smaller diameter does a great job at simulating better on-centre steering and makes the front end of the car feel much more alive. Highly recommended!

Thank you! I have admired your Targa for quite a while too - it was always a toss up during my search whether I should go coupe or targa. Coupe happened to be the first that popped up, but I still have a serious soft spot for the targas.

Welcome to the club Jarod!!
It is very cool to see a car with production number so close to mine (#307) and I also have the poster you mentioned hanging right above my car in the garage wondering if my car was there that day...
Congratulations on finding a such gem and never ending joy of owning a true 911:burnout:
Cheers!

Thanks Rob! I ordered the poster from eBay a couple weeks ago but has yet to arrive. Apparently production actually started at 61 for the 964 run, so if you subtract 61 from 307 that would make your car the 246th example (and mine the 263rd). Have not been able to confirm if this is true or not, though.

Thanks Jarod! Coupes are certainly going to have their benefits as far as chassis stiffness and realistically they’re less costly to maintain as the Targa tops by now all require some form of restoration to eliminate air/water leaks.

Enjoy your car and make sure to update as you continue through your journey.

Awesome story! And kudos to you for methodically saving to get what you want. I had a similar story - although I think my love for Porsche 911's started from playing Test Drive 1 & 2 on my PC as a kid (anyone else remember that?) - I was probably 10 or 11 at the time. At 22 I bought a 1984 Guards Red / Black cab (I'm definitely a cab guy) and I absolutely loved that car, fulfilling a childhood dream. Ended up selling it sight unseen to someone in Montreal actually. Many, many years later I now have a 964 cab which was always the car I sought after when I owned the '84.. I longed for the smooth bumpers and adjustable spoiler - just made the car look so much more modern to me.

I'm sure you will run into a fair amount of 'haters' thinking it's daddy's money or some other reason why you have a Porsche at 20 - but all those people just inspired me to work harder. I don't know what it is about 911's... I've had plenty of nice cars, but I definitely get more of the dirty looks from people when I drive the 911.

Thanks for the kind words. I am fortunate to be surrounded by a really great friend group, and try to do a good job at blocking out any negativity, so I've actually been very lucky so far to not have too much hate coming my way. I find the only people who judge are the people who pose no relevance to my life in the first place - you're right, it's mostly dirty looks in traffic (cops also assume it's Daddy's car). The strangest time was driving my Cayman to high school...thats where the real rumours lived, but you learn who your real friends are. I certainly believe my Dad has given me the car, but not in the form of money, but instead in the form of teaching work ethic. At the end of the day you will usually catch me in jeans & a baseball cap driving my 10 year old rusty beater BMW, the Porsche's have always been for my enjoyment and not to please anyone else (though letting kids sit in the cars has become a new favourite of mine...I hope some of them will get the same spark I did with the brand).

A small semi-related thread update. Ordered an FVD exhaust for the 964 today as it sits tucked away in winter garage storage. As well, today was a bit of a tough day as the 964 lost it's long-time garage mate - my Cayenne Turbo has been sent off to it's new owner in California. Serious sellers remorse right now, but the new owners are very excited. I will post another thread on that Cayenne's life story as it's certainly an interesting one, and much longer than can be posted here, but it started life in Jerry Seinfeld's Porsche collection, then went to another notable Porsche collector in LA, who sold it to someone in Toronto (then eventually landed in my hands), and has subsequently been bought back by the 2nd owners! Anyway, time to hit AutoTrader and find another Cayenne to fill the void.

Very nice C4 Jarod! Congrats to your purchase! Since the first 911 rolled out of the factory, guards red has always been the best looking color IMO. On a sporty Porsches. A GT3 or a GT4 still looks amazing in this color and it won't change.

Not as young as you, but I was 25 when I bought my first 911 ( a Ruf-ed, slighty strosek-ed 3.2 WTL cab, had to be educated about 911s...) and am 29 now, now for 2 years owner of a black currant pearl 1989 964 C4. I am thinking the same way about the car as you do: it has to stay OEM-ish but has to have some serious sportiness to it so RSised it goes... That's why it has Cup1s, Aero mirrors, RS-ish stance/alignment and air intakes/rear RS bumper. I chose a dished wheel from Renown, because I have leather Recaro Pole Positions in it and have long legs. :D My IG is @n1ne11 if you want to see some Alps&964, come by say hello, I'll follow you as I will surely find interest in some of your mods to come :) Greetings from Switzerland!

Thanks! Guards red has always been my favourite, but these cars look great in just about any colour. Gorgeous car, followed - I'm especially jealous of your pole positions...that is my next step. The RS bumper is simply a wider license plate section, right? Or are there other differences? Aero mirrors are another item on my list...

PPs were my first investment, as the car didn't come with it's original seats but with old Sparco's that were bleached out from the sun and were heavy/chunky. I will just have one advice for your about the PPs: go see them in real/ask a friend about his or so. I know that my friend and I we were so disappointed with the Gen. Leather version of the PPs that we had to force them to confirm our seat order. The quality and tone is miles away from a real leather seat like the ones we had in our 964s. We joked about it beeing an "Audi leather". We paid +80% on base PPs just for the leather version, so you will have to judge for yourself if it fits your requirements. :)

Otherwise I also made the error to not test fit them, so it needed a bit of time and cushion deleting to fit in correctly, especially with helmet on on track days (I am touching the sunroof and am 187cm). I also lost almost 20 pounds so the shoulder/side thiness of the PPs doesn't bother me too much now and they are pretty comfy for bucket seats. I have the original Recaro rails + mounts if it helps and the seatbelt receptacle may be quite low after mount, so you will have to either create a new mount in the tunnel or adapt something by yourself. There are a lot of infos about that on the Rennlist 964/993 forums. I choose the FVD steel plate that makes the receptacle longer.

The RS bumper doesn't have the upper lip on top of the plate. That's the main difference to me, maybe the plate area is larger, I don't know. Also I have an RSR front lip but I would take the original one as well, just doesn't bother me at all. Adds some sportiness in OEM fashion so it's OK.

Aero mirrors just give the last touch of 90s sportiness to the 964. I like to think that flags go with D90 as much as aeros go with Cup1s, so If I change one I'll probably do the other too. But that's just me.

Sweet write up Jarod, I'm personally looking forward to having a 964 project myself, I think an RS inspired Targa would be really sweet

Thanks. I can't say enough good things about the 964 platform, but I may be a bit biased. IMO the 964 is, and always will be, the best looking 911 generation. I also find it to be the sweet spot of the air-cooled range...modern enough I can actually daily drive it most of the summer with the a/c on, but still retains much of the original 911 feel - it hasn't become "soft".

Jarod964 01-05-2019 11:42 AM

It's now January in Ontario, which usually means freezing cold and lots of snow, but for some reason this year we've been given warm & sunny weather so far. Caved and took the car out to run some errands today.

I have no regrets with my choice (993) but admire the 964 just as much and frequently stalk this board. Just thought I’d add my congratulations on a beautiful car and sensible mods. It looks great already and I’m guessing you’re not done. Also admire the road trip home; as you say it’s a great way to bond. I purchased mine in Toronto ~18 months ago and my 13 year old daughter flew out with me to pick it up. We had a blast on our indirect 1,300+ mile trip home to Minneapolis.

Enjoy in in good health!

Very cool, I always respect someone willing to buy a car and hop in for an adventure straight away! I actually think I may recognize your 993 from the Toronto area...looks gorgeous, esp. in guards red.

Congrats! The 964 was always "the" car for me too and always pictured myself with one. You work hard enough, you can reach those goals. Enjoy it and drive the snot out of it!

Oh and don't forget to take before and after videos of the exhaust ;)

You may have, the previous owner was (is) a good guy/Porsche fanatic. It lived a different life up there, though, safe from the elements and preserved in semi-garage queen status. Now it’s basically my three season daily driver gleefully used in all types of conditions for over 12,000 mile, including a second 1,800 mile road trip.

I don’t mean to hijack your thread though, just wanted to let you know it looks great.

These cars much prefer to be driven than parked!

For this weeks entertainment, I decided to buy a small collection of 964 memorabilia from 1989/1990 to go with the car. Most of this came from a Porsche head office marketing employee in Toronto who retired and had accumulated a lot of stuff in his years with the company. Brochures, posters, calendar, etc. Nothing overly exciting but nonetheless some interesting artifacts to go with the car.

Love the block image of the front of the 964 in the technical manual. Would make for a cool t-shirt image.

Porsche nailed the text too, I read like that they already knew how these cars would be appreciated by enthusiasts 30 years later!

In the Porsche Carrera, we have the good fortune of creating a lasting design, By building it to survive, we offer those who understand what is fleeting and what is perpetual a very special car

The goal for the Carrera body is to ignore time

Legend with a future: the air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine

I haven't had the time (or interest) in going out into the cold garage and installing my exhaust yet...gotta love winter...but fortunately I can still waste money on cars without leaving the comfort of my office. Found a set of OEM 930/959/964 sport seats on Craigslist and scooped 'em up for the car. Should be here in a few days. 4-way power & heated! Will make a nice replacement for my worn out stock 4 ways.

Welcome! Ours may have been on the road together back in 1989, and perhaps on the boat when they were transported. The option codes are practically the same, and mine was just a bit earlier off the assembly line and in that Dealer trip. If interested, I have a bit of data from my 911 at https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...-my-964-a.html I have been able to talk to all but one of the 3 previous owners of mine. One being the dealer who made the trip. Unfortunately he had no photos from that visit.

I also became addicted to the Porsche brand early in life, buying a 77 911 S in my early 20’s. I’m 59 now and there have been only a few years since when I didnt have one of these fine machines in my garage. I sure wish I still had that 77. Your 964 is so nice. Enjoy it to the fullest and NEVER sell it.

BTW, why were so few 964’s sold in 89?

That's awesome, I wish I had more of the documentation from the tour like yours. Very interesting. I have been trying to figure out which dealership my car initially landed at (believed to be in Dallas) to see if I could contact someone for a bit more information, but its proving not to be easy since I don't have the original window sticker or anything.

Hoping I never have to let this one go...unless I find an RS America (or eventually a Carrera RS) to take it's place. In the late 80's Porsche was really struggling financially and the economy wasn't great so sales were down. In an attempt to save the business they dumped a LOT of money into the 964 redesign, but that meant a higher price which many couldn't afford. There was very little demand for the whole 964 generation and therefore it became a very limited run.

Due for an update. Installed a secondary muffler bypass this weekend (G pipe) from FVD/brombacher/dansk. Unable to drive the car due to weather, but startup sound and first impressions are awesome. Has a muscle car sound now....but we'll see how it is under load in the spring. It also saves like 20 lbs from the rear of the car which is an added bonus.

The Venture Tour photos are great!!!

The G-pipe was one of my favorite modifications on my 964.

Seeing your clear indicators has me thinking about getting a set and smoking them as another poster has done here.

First time I drove my car hard after installing the G pipe, my face lit up in excitement. I agree that it really comes alive above 4k.

I like the clear indicators but I have to admit they are a bit "brighter" than I'd like. The stock clear fog light has a silver backing behind the lens, but the aftermarket corners have a white backing, so it's not a perfect match. With the brake ducts I've added I think it looks ok, but if I were to put the fog lights back in, I'd put back the orange markers.

Paint them! Makes a massive difference. The white backing is way to bright, I agree.

Take them apart, paint the insides, silicone back together. Looks perfect.

My experience might differ from others because I think I was sold duds...the fitment was just way off. We literally had to sand down parts of the housing to make it fit in it's spot, and even then it was very difficult to get properly into place/flush.

It's really not that dark.. I used Rust-oleom 'Dark Steel' Metallic Paint & primer in one. I wanted it darker but it was still lighter than I expected. I think Kricci used a lighter shade if you look at his thread.

Fair enough... probably a lot to do with his car being red. Either way, could get a similar effect with more of a bright silver or even chrome paint in a can.

WIth the original white backings, when I put them on my black car they were so bright they were glowing. Looked horrible.

Jarod964 04-05-2019 07:35 PM

Spring is approaching so figured I'm due for an update. Sport seats are installed and a major improvement...more comfortable, better grip, and much better looking. The G pipe lasted for all of 20 minutes - I drove it home then promptly brought it back to the shop the next morning to put the 2nd muffler back on. Turns out I already have a primary muffler bypass (cup pipe) and didn't even realize it (installed by the prev owner)....adding the 2nd bypass on top of that essentially straight piped the car and made it unbearable. Next step will be trying to find a stock primary muffler and try the G pipe in combination with that, then will see what I like better.

Just got the car back from my local Porsche dealership where it received it's spring service (which was not friendly to the wallet this year). Oil change with Porsche classic motor oil, 4 new Michelin PS2 tires, brake fluid, and tidied up rear brakes a bit. There is something very satisfying to having the car freshened up for the season though. My detailer is coming to do a proper paint correction and paint coating on the cars Monday, then it'll be time to hit the road. The 911 also has a new garage mate...my new 1986 944 Turbo. Clearly I have a thing for red Porsche's from the '80s.

Had I know you already had a primary muffler delete I would have never suggested getting the G pipe!!! Man that must have been loud!!!! If I were you, I’d just leave the primary bypass in place ( larger weight savings than the g pipe) and run the factory secondary muffler

Hit me up when you’re here for Luft we can get our two venture tour cars together for a reunion 👌

The best way I can describe the noise would be Subaru meets helicopter. Lol. I find the primary bypass a bit too quiet for my taste - might be time to bite the bullet and look for a full exhaust. I won't have my car at Luft but I will be in the area all week and hoping to soak in as much Porsche stuff as possible, so I'll stay in touch. Hoping to meet a lot of the west coast 964 owners I've chatted with on here.

Car is looking great and the 944 looks Fab. I'm slowly dropping hints to my friend that if he sells his 944 turbo I would be inclined to take it off his hands. Sorry you didn't like the added noise of the secondary delete but it's definitely not for everyone. I have the primary and secondary delete and love it. I wish I could turn it up louder hahah

Haha, how do you still have any hearing left??? One thing I have noticed is that 2 964s of the same year can have the same exhaust mod done and still sound completely different...each one seems to have it's own very unique personality. Could be my imagination though. I loved the sound from the outside, but inside the car I thought my brain was going to explode.

I'm sorry could you repeat didn't quite hear you? HAHAH! You could be correct on that. I will say after the engine was rebuilt it isn't as loud as it used to be.

Had my detailer come by yesterday for a spring cleaning - he spent almost 10 hours on doing a 3 stage polish and coating on the cars. Very impressed by the results.

Another beauty

Hi Jarod, I just read this thread this morning. That is such a beautiful car and I love all the mods that you have done. It’s just about perfect. Your recounting of buying your car as a young man really got me reminiscing, as it did to others who read your story.

Mine is not so different. After a childhood obsession I finally bought my first 911 at age 24 in April 1988. It was an 30k mile Arrow Blue non-sunroof car with sport seats that a US military guy brought back from Germany. I purchased the car in the US from his estate for $13,500 US. I told my wife I was buying the car to flip as I really couldn’t afford it (our 3rd car) at the time.... thank god it didn’t break on me. Anyway, I didn’t list the car for sale as I had promised and instead I drove it from April until the end of November that year. A young doctor approached me at a party, ( the 911 was parked outside and he tracked me down) he begged me to sell it to him and I ended up with a nice Corolla GTS on trade..... the Toyota was 100% profit on the trade. I swore that someday when I could really afford it, I would be back in a 911. About 15 years and 2 kids later, I bought a 1984 Carrera and that started me on a restoration and collecting binge the continues today at age 56. So far, A life long love story with air cooled Porsches.... and they have brought me so much joy!

Thanks for bring all those memories back!

Thanks Greg. Sounds like especially for those of us that got into it at a really young age, the Porsche bug is nearly impossible to shake. Worse problems to have...
