Default Engine bay system simplifications

I just pulled out my engine/transmission as a birthday present to myself.

This is for switching out the transmission for my re-geared unit and rs clutch as well as catching up on years of less than perfect maintenance. Will reseal everything but not pulling the heads or splitting the case at this point. Basically I want to restore the engine systems and engine compartment. I’m looking at this car as a long term thing and that said I’m definitely going to do my best remove or replace- and all those plastic venturies, valves funnels and what have you will certainly add up- and certainly not last another 20 years or more....

Its been great familiarizing myself with what was a mysterious tangle of stuff just a couple of days ago. Still have a ways to go and with that I ask:

What the (*&# is this vacuum stuff all about:

Also I was thinking- why not just run the blow by breather to a catch can- then I realized that the oil tank IS the catch can/separator. But still I wonder i there is any reason not to just run a hose from the breather to intake (pre throttle) with a pvc valve inline like the days of old?

I really love looking at pics of simplified engine bays on these cars ( @robt964 a personal favorite) and simultaneously dying to get the whole area in as new condition. May go as far as to make a new loom just to get rid crusty connectors and rubber bits. Also thinking of the Benz pump up front and pulling the power steering components. Wondering about the specifics (hose sizes and threads etc) are needed for that.

A/C will have to stay until the frunk mounted electric compressor gets done for the 964... @Jonny Retrofit

Another thought about this is that its prep for future intake mods- I love the full plenum with shorty ITB’s/.... hey its ok to dream right?

Yeah-Goughary I should just pry your project out of your hands!

But seriously if you’d considered changing the bearings and seals on the throttle body I might send it your way....

The itb”s are going to be further on down the line on the list for now. But when using itb’s what does one do with the charcoal canister, Evap, oil tanks stuff??

Looking forward to seeing your progress Pete.
I too really enjoy a clean and tidy, minimalist engine bay.
I'm doing my engine tins and valve covers over the Christmas break.
You may be interested in the thread I tried to revive a while ago but a few negative people ruined it, it's called the 964 engine bay is ugly.

D- I’ll check the leads. They are a Japanese make. Might be switching them out depending on how this all goes so if your interested. They seem in decent nick though some of the rubber at the spark plug hole has expanded due to oil leakage.

And be as far as that other thread- to me beauty goes through and through. If The outside matters then the inside matters as well!

What's going on with the oil tank, new filler location too? Relocated to the front on the engine?

Really curious now too. You've removed just about everything on top of the motor.....fuel rails included....
I thought ITB's were further down the road. Looks like a very short road! LOL
Can't wait to see this.
