Default Oil Level Gauge Guestimate

Hey all,

What would you guess the number of litres of oil to be between about the 3/4 (2 o’clock position) and the 1/4 (4 o’clock position) on the oil level gauge?

Anyone know?

Thank you!

I would think abt one quarter to one third of an oil bottle---but go slow if you add so you don't over fill.

Topped mine off a few weeks ago and I used about a quarter of a bottle and it went from just a hair over the red low mark to about the 2 o'clock position.

A little bit of oil does move the needle a good amount, so like Goughary said, go slow. Don't forget to check the dipstick to make sure the oil level is good too.

If you get any sort of movement on the gauge just stop there and don't add more oil. It will just end up in your intake manifold. If you treat it as an on/off switch you will never have problems when the temperature rises and the oil expands.

Thanks all!

When you are all talking about 'bottles of oil', you mean litre bottles, right?

@JasonAndreas - so you mean, add oil with engine still running and keep an eye on the gauge as well, and if this moves up even slightly, stop?

That's a relief then.
It would seem my car uses about 1/4 litre of oil per 1000kms, which I think is still within tolerances.
