964 Climate Control
Looking for some assistance with my Climate Control. I own a 1990 C4 pictured here. Yesterday I ran my AC and it was blowing good. Parked the car and when I started it back up the Climate Control would not blow properly. It seemed liked the blower was not working with minimal air flow even on setting 4. In fact, in positions 1,2 and even 3 I was getting not air flow from the ducts I checked all the fuses and they are good. the blowers under the front hood working fine. I removed the rear blower resistor seems to be extremely dirty with a little rust. I will clean that up and see if that does the trick. Has anyone experience this problem with the climate control?

Make sure your ignition switch is not in need of replacement. After starting, the key may not be returning to the required position. If this occurs, the a/c will not work. To check this, try turning the key counter clockwise just a tad after you start the car (not enough to turn the car off). If your a/c becomes functional again when you do this, you need a new ignition switch. Good luck!

Thanks Kyle. The AC seems to be functioning, just that the Climate Control knob does not provide sufficient air flow even when it is on the highest output #4. Let you know.

AC ran strong today Did nothing to fix this issue. Possible that fan shut down because vehicle running too hot? Not sure what to do now.

Check the rear blower
Suggest that you check, maybe replace, the rear blower resistor. If the rear blower will not run then the CCU will shut off the front fans. Usual cause is a failing blower resistor. |

Also check the fuse and resistor for condenser up front. Both known to go bad.

In this case, I would start with checking all HVAC servo movements. I would guess your fresh air servo does not open when required. The test is done in 5 minutes, see this page for procedure and details. Cheers, Tore |
This happened to me....it was the rear blower fuse, not resistor, that is located in the rear behind the panel on the left.

I had trouble with the rheostat in the control unit (the blower speed controller dial) where it was only making intermittent electrical contact. Try pushing in on the dial and see if that works. That is all that was wrong with mine, after replacing the blower and other bits. |
There is a long list of fuses and relays that can cause the problem. I went through 4 or 5 before finding the culprit.
