Very cool Lou a question for you. Do you just put it in drive and let the trans controller handle the shifting?
when driving my 91 Tip Coupe in a spirited manor I tend to let the controller handle the upshifts and a combination of the manual gate and throttle control for the down shifts.

I'm doing 125 at the end of the front straight and 138 at the Bus Stop.

Seems like the "bad reputation" call for our "tips" mostly come from folks who don't have one.
Now driving sixth 911-'92 C2 Cab Tip. Perfect for us elderly drivers here in Arizona.

the auto vs manual discussion in sports cars is a tired one
agree that driving a tip 964 is better than no 964 at all, tips can be quite enjoyable
but unless you are using a 964 usually in stop n go traffic, no one in their right mind (and with healthy body) would prefer a 964 tip over a manual

I've had my '90 C2 TIP since 2002 and regularly track it. I'm in an advanced group, and hold my own against MOST cars, not the GT3's and raced prepped ones.
Take a a look at a video at the Glen from 2013. As stated before, the TIP changes the shift pattern to the most aggressive in less than a lap. If this link doesn't work, go to YouTube "TUTALOU at the Glen 2013"

Just how many miles have you driven a Tip car

I bought my Tip in January and love it. I grew up driving manuals, but wouldn’t have one now for regular( not daily) driving. I understand racing around and shifting is fun, but not while drinking coffee, and talking on the phone. In any kind of traffic at all shifting gets old for me in 2 min.

Here is the problem with 964 Tip Coupes.....they don't exist! I mean, I have one but I am literally the only person I know in real life that owns one. I have read things on the internet of other 964 Tip coupe owners but have never actually seen one in person. After a lifetime of MT cars and trucks and 4X4s I decided I wanted a 964 Tip coupe. Started looking in mid 2016. Found my current car (1990 C2 58,000 miles) in late 2016. Didn't buy it because I wanted to find something "better/different/cheaper/closer." Kept looking throughout Southern California and surrounding states. Nothing. Crickets. Plenty of Tip Cabs for sale but no Coupes. By mid 2017 I decided I better at least go drive 100 miles or so to look at my current car. The good news was that while I was dragging my feet, the PO was making improvements to the car so that by the time I looked at it, it was much nicer that the posted photos. The bad news was that I had zero bargaining power. There literally were zero other 964 Tip Coupes advertised for sale on any of the major boards. Might have been something out there word of mouth, but nothing advertised. It would have been nice if I could have just showed an ad with a lower priced Tip but there were none. So, yeah in theory Tip "should" command a lesser price but the reality is, they are VERY difficult to find for sale.
Just my experience, you may have better luck.
In the end, I loved the car from the first drive and enjoy it more each time I am in it. Took my son to the Porsche Dealer on Father's Day to kick tires and chat with a friend. Put it in 3 for the drive there (I like 3 on city streets so that it starts in 1st over D). It was relaxing. Then, after coffee and on the way home, I flipped it over to manual mode and let her rev out and breath as I banged the gears from stop light to stop light. Total blast.
Good luck with your search.

in my search for a 964, i have run across many tips for sale just this year. they are definitely out there - maybe more so now that 5sp cars are drying up. a C2 tip might make a great alternative to a C2/5 for many people.

What kind of asking prices are you seeing? I'm no longer in the market, just curious.

agree that they are out there... just in the last 3 months on various sale sites i have seen 3-4 tip coupes... one just sold on bat this week

Three Wheelin'
hi guys, I'm debating my 964 purchase options again and with every passing year feel like I may be getting priced out of the manual market for the ideal 964. I'm coming to the realization that pursuing an automatic might be my best option as I want to customize the car with rotiforms, lowering kit, etc. and that will be pricey. Auto coupes don't seem to come up too often here but can they still be had in the low to mid 30's? Would have to be black in color and hopefully as close to sub 100k miles as possible but really depends on condition more then anything. With so many people going for manual's I was hoping maybe to find a decent deal somewhere that would leave some cash left over to make it my own. I know my post is vague but Just looking for thoughts/ opinions. Thanks
