Default Proper way to convert C4 to C2 and some smart weight reduction?

I’ve been reading as much as I can about converting C4 to C2 - still a little confused. Some people make it sound very easy - just unhook this and done. Then I see the coupler that was used on a members conversion and realize that it seems impossible to do without that. Of course, installing a C2 trans would be an option as well. I’m familiar, somewhat, with the other supporting mods that would be required (shift box and linkage...). So what is the “correct” way of doing this - while keeping in mind costs?

As far as lightening - I don’t want to strip the entire interior - but I’m open to race seats and a package tray. I wouldn’t be opposed to converting to manual steering as well (Not sure what nuances are introduced converting a C4 to C2 THEN manual steering?). I’d like to keep AC.

Thanks!

I have a C2 trans. Housing has been re-welded (Bell only, not the support points) but other than that it was working when on the car (not mine).

on a 993C4 you can unbolt the AWD mechanism, which is at the forward end of the transmission on those cars, bolt on a 2wd nose piece and then reinstall, no problem.

The 964 C4 trans has concentric output shafts
Seen here, the green shaft is the input from the engine, it is geared directly to the red forward drive which connects to the rear wheel drive in the AWD mechanism at the forward end of the trans, Easy enough to unbolt the AWD part but then there is no drive to the rear wheels, you have to connect the red and blue concentric shafts while leaving the AWD part off. There are a few other issues that need to be addressed as well but that is the big one

Have anyone tried to convert to C2 and made the car front wheel drive only?

The "correct" way to do this with cost in mind is to sell your C4 and buy a C2. Anything else is a total waste of money.

For what it's worth a properly set up C4 (thicker sway bars and better suspension and a good alignment) is nearly indistinguishable from a C2 as far as handling and performance on public roads goes. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fooling themselves.

I have run my C4 on the track against 964 and 993 C2's Boxsters 996's and never had an issue keeping up or outperforming them....and I am an enthusiastic amateur at best.

My 2c worth.

Neil
