Hello all

i just got a’91 and have started to clean it up.

can I get some input on what I can do about the leaking seal? on the passenger side front end?
The drivers side seal area is dry.

thanks.

Welcome!
I'm no help regarding the seal, but happy to help spend your money in other places... before you button things up, I suggest installing a steering rack brace and upgraded bushings:

Welcome to the clan, the underside looks very clean. But by 964 standards, that's not a "leak"... think of it as Porsche Perspiration.

What kind of lift or stands are you using to work under your car.

I pick mine up today. I "thought" I had a blown power steering rack seal - it was a broken/burst high pressure line on the power steering pump.

My rack was “sweating” also and I opted to change it out. My prior experience with sweating racks on 928’s was that the sweating could lead to catastrophic failure without much warning. If you decide to change it consider the following. If you’re doing the work yourself the rack doctor is a good option, if you’re paying for someone else to do the work they may not provide a warranty on a rack doctor rebuild. I ended up sourcing mine through the mechanic to insure that if the new rack prematurely leaks/fails it’s covered for parts and labor.

If you do decide to change the rack there are tons of WYAIT components including tie rods, rack bushings and brace as noted. Since an alignment will be needed it would be a good opportunity for corner balancing.

Yes it’s a slippery slope! Congrats on the new ride and enjoy in good health!

Steering rack looks like it has been serviced recently. No undercoating. I would pop the rod seal and investigate the source of the leak. Could be something left after rack rebuild.

Thanks!

I just also had a 91 with a rack starting to leak a bit, best bet is to go with a rebuilt rack- definitely no need to spend the money on a new one. Pelican parts sell them too i believe & labour isn't that bad.

When you pop it to take a look will it go back on easily or not?

thanks Tarek, looks like I am heading for the rebuilt rack solution. I bet a new one is real money
