Tom W,

What's the weight of the a/c components that you removed?

Thanks.

Howard: No. The CCU is still used for those rare occasions where heat is required (although it will be less heat with the cup bypass pipe I will be installing soon). I also plan to tap the CCU to wire a switch to turn the oil cooling fan to high (as I have done with my 993). I'll also be looking to use it to be able to run the fan for the Cargraphic cooler I'm adding to the spot where the A/C was removed from the front fender well.

I do have lots of A/C bits available for sale... and yes, the pipes are a major PITA to remove .

Erick: I've been too lazy to weigh them yet. I'm guessing 30-40 lbs.

Wow... 30-40 pounds is quite a bit!

Are there stages of a/c removal that are possible instead of removing everything associated with the a/c?

1. Can you just remove the belt?
2. Can you just remove the compressor?

Why or why not?

Thanks.

Ok Erick, your question got me off my butt and out to the garage...

Weight of stuff from the engine compartment: 18 lbs
Weight of stuff from wheel well: 13.5 lbs (the fan is heavier than you might think)
I did not weigh all the piping. my guess is about 2 lbs.

So, removal of A/C saves about 33 lbs. This does not include the stuff in the front trunk as I have not removed it (yet).

I see no reason why you couldn't remove whatever you want (once the Freon is removed - I had my shop do that before I started). I will be adding a Cargraphic oil cooler back to the front wheel well, so not all the weight is saved.

I'm also adding brake cooling ducting and switching to 'big blacks' ("big reds" that are black) - but that has nothing to do with the A/C . I will weigh the heater blower and pipes when I swap it for the carbon fiber cup bypass pipe so enquiring minds get answers to questions on weight! I also have to finish the radio and speaker removal this weekend (since I already sold the parts) and I'll get a weight on them.

Once all this stuff is done I will probably check/adjust the corner weights on the car and find out what the beast weighs.

Tom great information, thanks!
I will ditch my AC, I will do some reading about what to do in order to have the alternator going. Not sure if I can just get a short belt or if I need to do something else.
