Cleaning Fuel Cap / New Fuel Cap Seal

1 Attachment(s)
I just got a new one of these fuel cap seals: 944-201-553-01-M100
Do I need to do anything to it before using or just install on the fuel cap? Wasn't sure if I should put a light coat of oil or some other product on it before starting to use.

In addition to that my fuel cap currently looks like this (haven't installed new seal yet):

What is the best way to clean it up?

Steffen Dubois 05-02-2018 02:22 AM

Mine looked the same as yours. I have grinded the surface with fine sandpaper and added a new seal.

Buddy of mine suggested using acetone as well which I might try. Do you recall what grit sandpaper you used? Was it like 500 or more like 2000?

that annoyed the crap outta me so i got a new filler cap. just put a new gasket you'll be fine.

I used #0000 steel wool and finished with a fine coat of oil after cleaning. Also lubricated the lock with graphite while I was in there.

Where did you put the graphite lube? In the keyhole? Is an oil based lube bad to use?

Steffen Dubois 05-06-2018 04:05 PM

Oil is sticky over the years and graphite not. Always graphite for locks.

Do you just put the graphite in the keyhole?

Correct. :) Can put some on the key and repeatedly insert it and twist the lock.
