Angry !@#$!! Hood shocks AGAIN!

Seems as though cold weather aggravates the problem. I just replaced the damn things last year, and now again have a sore head! Don't even THINK about installing a Bra! I have heard somewhere someone is offering a so-called "Lifetime Warranty" variety. Anyone know of a vendor here in the States??

BTW, Merry Xmas to all!

Horst,

I know that you can go to shops who are specialiced in these things, and they can give the shocks more pressure inside. May be that's a idea. They will put the pressure in for more heavy load.

Since I live in the Ozarks, I am considering a "Bubba" fix= cut off a broomhandle to the correct length.

Check Vertex I bought heavy duty hood shocks from them for my 1987 911...I'm not sure if they have them for the 964 though (if the 964 hood shocks are different). I replaced mine as soon as I got my 964, but I didn't get the heavy duty kind- just the regular ones...

Yup, just replaced mine, wasn't fun either...well, maybe for my girlfriend it was, she was holding the hood up for me. Everytime my "pottymouth" came into play - BONK!!

There are stiffer versions offered by Weltmeister if my memory serves me, the ones I replaced with came as new spares when I bought the car. If I experience the same failure rate that Horst has experienced, I'll surely look the stiffer versions up!

Groit's Garage makes a nice extendable hood prop - it fit's nicely in to the trunk and will hold up a huge amount (a 4 light pod for instance). the just remove your old ones (lighter weight )
The cup cars and RS's used a shoft rod and a cap head bolt on the shock tower, no shocks.

I use my emergency triangle case. It fits perfectly. Mine have a mind of their own. One day they hold the lid up the next day they do not.

I installed the "lifetime warranty" units from Performance Products on the hood (front) in March of '98. Once or twice over the last few months, they've dropped a tad after opening. A second pull up has done the trick, not time for replacement yet.

Yup, I think those are the ones I'm referring to.

Next time around I'll have to definitely give them a whirr...thanks for the confirmation Randall.

I, too, have the Weltmeister "lifetime" ones from Performance products on my 65 911 front hood and they're great! I bought some from Vertex Auto - they were the cheap ones, and they were crap! They lasted one month, no kidding!!! Then I got the Performance Products ones, and they're going strong now for about a year with no droop at all.

I'll have to take a look today to see if an engine lid remedy will work.
For the rear lid, you can fabricate a longer mounting post to accept a pair of shocks instead of a single. Two worn out units will have more push than a new one and solve the problem. It has to be done for both sides to keep the lid even when down. Try it.

In the research for my 911SC book I found one guy who has installed a manual opeing device instead of messing with the gas struts. Like in the old days. He says quite rightly that the engine lid is opened so little it makes no difference and at least a gust of wind will not bring it down on your head.
