Ang good durable enamel paint will work just fine. Wurth also make a high temperature paint, but it’s overkill and you can’t use any primer with that paint. If you’re stripping all the paint, you’ll want to use a self etching primer first.

I'm beginning to get more and more paranoid about cleaning everything with the oil system. Does anyone know if I can clean the inside of the oil tank? I'm thinking why can't I just put some petrol in the tank, shake it around and drain it a few times?

My fear of this is what if you dislodge a larger piece of something in the tank and it clogs an input, perhaps causing oil starvation later on. Not sure how valid my concern is, but I've always considered oil tanks/oil coolers to be something I'd prefer to pay to have properly cleaned inside/outside.

It's amazing how touching anything can become a can of worms...
This is one of those things where, you don't ask don't tell don't touch don't worry...or you send it out for cleaning.

Man you are a legend, I never even thought of a scope.... I have a few cameras I use for work that plug into my phone!
I'm glad people are enjoying it! I have no idea what I'm doing but I will know this whole car inside out in about 10 years time haha

Got the oil tank back today. I'll put a few coats of paint on it tomorrow night then off for an ultrasonic bath on Friday.. hopefully I'll have the car running on the weekend if parts arrive!

I think it is because the thermostat is 'free floating' and therefore the position of the pipes and hoses govern the position of it. I did consider trying to adjust the position but thought it not worth it. If I remember my conclusion was that I would have had to shorten the rubber hoses to the oil tank by about 5mm to pull it up a bit and didn't really want to mees around with them. My mount had split and I have no idea how long it had been like that, probably quite a few years. In my opinion the thermostat is really held in position by all the pipes and hoses so the mount has very little effect. I did replace it anyway when I renewed all the hoses.
